Rumors fly that Bush will visit War College

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, June 22, 2007

NEWPORT — Although President Bush is rumored to be planning a visit to the Naval War College next week in what would be his first visit to Rhode Island during his presidency, officials yesterday would not confirm whether he is coming.

Cmdr. Karen Sellers, the War College’s public affairs officer, would not comment on talk that Mr. Bush will be in Newport on June 28 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Naval War College’s Naval Command College, a school for military officers from around the world.

She said that even if the president were coming to Newport, her office would not be able to release any information, and referred all inquiries to the White House.

The White House press office would not confirm yesterday that Mr. Bush will visit Newport.

The five-day symposium and reunion for the 1,600 alumni of the Naval Command College will be held June 25-29. An exhaustive schedule for the celebration posted online by the War College lists in detail each day’s events, including presentations, speeches and meals. For June 28, it has only one listing, an event in the evening. For the day, however, it says, “No events scheduled. Free time for alumni.”

Though officials have not said that the president will be in the city, protesters are planning to be outside the War College June 28. Mark Stahl, coordinator for the Rhode Island Community Coalition for Peace, sent out e-mails this week announcing plans for a demonstration.
