Injuries reported in scuffle outside store
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, October 10, 2008
NARRAGANSETT — A Town Council member and the council president’s son accused each other of assault Wednesday morning, and the police are investigating the incident.
Michael Handrigan, 43, reported that he had been assaulted by Councilman James P. Durkin, 48, at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, police Capt. Gerald D. Driscoll said yesterday.
A few minutes later, Driscoll said, Durkin reported the same incident, saying Handrigan assaulted him.
“Both have made statements and have accused each other,” Driscoll said. “We are in the process of interviewing other witnesses.”
The two men arrived at the Cumberland Farms store at Point Judith Road (Route 108) and Knowlesway Extension on separate errands, Driscoll said. They had a discussion that led to “some sort of physical altercation” outside the store, on the windowless Knowlesway side of the building.
The men gave conflicting accounts of what happened. “They both admit to exchanging angry words,” Driscoll said. Durkin reported a minor finger injury. Handrigan reported a minor facial scrape.
“We have identified people who perhaps can assist” in sorting out what happened, Driscoll said. They are being interviewed. No one has been charged.
