Police complete probe of April 6 fatal accident

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, May 2, 2008

NARRAGANSETT — The Police Department has wrapped up its investigation of the pedestrian accident last month that killed a 19-year-old University of Rhode Island student and has sent its findings to the state attorney general’s office, which will determine whether to pursue criminal charges, Police Chief Joseph T. Little Jr. said yesterday.

A car driven by Gayle Cherenzia, 53, of Westerly, struck and killed Mary Ellen “Molly” Offer, an art major from Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and injured her roommate, Holly Maganzini, 20, of Wakefield, Mass., as the two walked along Boston Neck Road early on April 6 after leaving a house party.

Little declined to comment on the department’s findings, saying details will not be released until after the attorney general’s office completes is review.

The attorney general’s spokesman, Michael J. Healey, said the office will determine whether to charge the driver and whether the people who held the house party should face charges.

Cherenzia potentially faces one count of driving to endanger, death resulting, and one count of driving to endanger, serious bodily injury resulting, Healey said.

The people who held the party could be charged under the state’s social host law if they allowed underage drinking, he said.

Healey gave no time frame for when the attorney general’s review will be complete.
