‘Ordinary People’ being honored tonight

The fifth annual Thanksgiving Tuesday Awards – ``Ordinary People Who Do Extraordinary Things,” – sponsored by South County Hospital, will be held tonight at 5 at The Towers in Narragansett. The free program is open to the public.

The ceremony honors individuals, families, and organizations who make a difference in their communities.

This year’s five awardees are: Ora Wry of Narragansett; Christopher Powell of Jamestown; David Gates, Sharon DeLuca, and George Geaber, all of South Kingstown.

Wry has been involved in Welcome House, is a member of the GFWC of South County, volunteers with the Cane Day Care Center, is a member of the Saugatucket River Heritage Corridor Coalition and several other organizations.

Powell is co-founder of the Conanicut Island Raptor Project, and has served on the Fools Rules Regatta for many years which donates funds to a different charity each year.

Gates is a member of the South Kingstown Lion’s Club, is a volunteer firefighter and helps organize the annual South Kingstown Fireman’s Parade.

DeLuca is involved in the CARES mentoring program, and is on the board of the South Kingstown Educational Foundation.

Geaber has been a member of the South Kingstown Lions Club for 40 years, has been a local coach and coordinator of numerous fundraising efforts.

Trees, invasive species on tap tonight at library

A program on tree diseases and invasive species will be presented at the Westerly Public Library tonight at 6:30.

John Campanini, technical advisor from the Rhode Island Tree Council, will talk about tree problems and how to make a diagnosis.

Paul Dolan, acting deputy chief of the DEM the state Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Forest Environment, will discuss popular plants that are considered invasive species in Rhode Island.

Tonight’s program will be the culmination of the Rhode Island Tree Stewards course that has been held in the library over the past several weeks.
