Norman Bird Sanctuary Programs

The Norman Bird Sanctuary, 583 Third Beach Rd., will offer programs for the entire family ths month.
Family Nature Night will be held Dec. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants will join together for Holiday Wreath and Candle Making. Everyone will learn to create holiday decorations with a natural twist and each will leave with a seasonal candle and wreath of their own creation. Early registration is recommended as space is limited. The program cost is $6 for members age 13 and older and $4 for member children ages 3 to 12 or $8 for non-members age 13 and older and $6 for non-member children ages 3 to 12. One adult will be admitted free for each paid child.
Teaming with Nature: Winter Wonderland for preschoolers ages 2 to 4 and their parents will meet Dec. 6 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. These engaging, age-appropriate Saturday classes include animals, crafts, songs and outdoor discovery. This month, participants will explore the many ways that animals and plants survive in the winter. The group will bundle up as they explore nature’s coldest season through games, animal presentations and more. The Teaming with Nature program meets on the first Saturday of every month. The cost is $4 for member child or $6 for nonn-member child. Parents can participate free of charge.
Bird Tales nature storytime meets Dec. 10 and 24 at 10 a.m. The program features animals, authors and art. Participants will read a story, meet an animal or go on a discovery hike and complete a craft project. The cost is $2 per member child and $4 per non-member child. Adults can participate free of charge. Registration is encouraged.
EcoExplorers: Hooray for Herps! will meet Dec. 13 at 10 a.m. Participants well learn about the fascinating world of reptiles and amphibians. EcoExplorers features hands-on nature programs for children in kindergarten to grade three. The group meets on the second Saturday of every month and animals, hiking, experiments and other exciting activities are included in every session. The program fee is $6 per class for members, $8 for non-members.
EcoHome Series: Recycled Holiday Gifts and Cards will meet Dec. 14 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Participants can save themselves a trip to the overcrowded mall and, for their holiday shopping, get creative with earth-friendly alternatives. The sanctuary’s eco-art expert Stephanie Zanati will teach many fun and simple ideas for making the holiday a natural one. Participants will make their own recycled holiday cards, wrapping paper, and artful gifts. The program fee is $6 for members age 13 and older, $4 for member children ages 3 to 12 and $8 for non-members age 13 and older, $6 for non-member children ages 3 to 12.
Green Team will meet Dec. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn how to make a difference in helping the local environment. This series features environmental action projects for children in grades 4 to 6. Sessions will build on each other, so participants are encouraged to sign up for the entire season (students can still register even if they cannot attend every session). This monthly program meets every third Saturday of the month and concludes with an overnight nature program in May. The program cost for eight classes from October through May is $40 for members, $50 for non-members.
Homes for the Holidays Camp will be held Dec. 22 and 23. Campers will explore many seasonal habitats and learn the ways that the sanctuary’s animals use them to get through the coldest season. Camp is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. before- and after- care is available. The cost is $70 for member children, $80 for non-member children.
Winter is the Coolest Camp will meet Dec. 29 to 31. This holiday camp features outdoor fun with a wintery twist. Participants will discover a side of nature that few ever see. The group will bundle up for hikes, study the science of snowflakes, and even make their own frosty treats. Camp is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with before- and after- care available. The cost is $105 per member child, $120 for non-member children.
