House, Senate candidates to square off in forums
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, October 3, 2008
A local group best known for opposing gambling in Rhode Island will sponsor two political forums this month for General Assembly candidates.
Concerned Citizens About Casino Gambling will host one forum for Senate candidates on Tuesday from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at Middletown Public Library. The following week, at the same time and place, House candidates will be invited to appear.
Keith W. Stokes, executive director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, will serve as the moderator. The forum is open to the public.
The forums “will focus on state fiscal and policy issues that impact the future of Newport County and the State of Rhode Island economy,” according to a statement from the group.
This is the first time that the group has sponsored a forum. It is best known for its public opposition to gambling initiatives in Rhode Island.
“There will be some questions on gambling, such as ‘what are your positions on gambling and the expansion of gambling,’ but the rest of them are going to be economic,” said Justin McLaughlin, a member of the group and a Newport city councilman.
McLaughlin said the questions will be provided to the candidates in advance to get thoughtful answers.
“We’re not trying to ‘gotcha,’ ” he said.
McLaughlin said the group decided to hold the forum after a discussion among members who complained that “these candidates don’t get enough of a chance to explain to voters how they feel on a variety of issues.”
