Deportation violator arrested on credit-card fraud charge

01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 2, 2008

MIDDLETOWN — A Peruvian man is in federal custody as an alleged deportation violator after being arrested by Middletown police last month on a charge of credit-card fraud.

The police had responded on June 17 to the CVS, at 35 East Main Rd., for a report of a man in a check-out line who was suspected of using someone else’s credit card to purchase $400 worth of CVS gift cards earlier that month, according to a police report. A CVS employee had recognized the man, later identified as Juan Alcedo, 55, of Central Falls, and called the police.

The police found four credit cards in the CVS parking lot that had been stolen from a car parked at the Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge, the police said.

The police arrested Alcedo on a felony charge of fraudulent use of credit cards and a misdemeanor charge of receiving stolen goods.

The police determined that the name on the man’s Social Security card and driver’s license — Alcedo — was false, according to a police report. Alcedo told the police that he was from Peru and was in the United States legally, but he didn’t have supporting paperwork with him, Lt. Robert S. Nutt said this week.

After fingerprinting Alcedo, the police determined that his name is Marcos Gutierrez-Vega and that he was wanted by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a deportation violator.

The man is in federal custody under the name Juan Alcedo on immigration violations, pending a hearing before a federal judge, according to ICE spokeswoman Paula Grenier. Alcedo has a criminal history, Grenier said, although she could not elaborate.
