MIDDLETOWN — A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured in a two-car crash on West Main Road on Monday night.
The boy, who suffered severe head injuries, was a passenger in a northbound car attempting to make a left turn into a parking lot at 700 West Main Rd. about 8:45 p.m. when it was hit by another vehicle traveling south, according to the police.
The boy was taken to Newport Hospital for treatment along with the driver, an adult passenger and two other children — a 6-year-old and 3-year-old — who were in the northbound car. He was later transferred to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, in Providence, while the other occupants of the vehicle were treated and released.
Local police received multiple calls about the collision. Three Middletown rescue units responded to the scene, as did one Navy rescue crew. Traffic on West Main Road was restricted to two lanes for a short time as the units treated the injured, according to the police.
The accident is still under investigation.
