MIDDLETOWN — A Newport woman has been charged with two felony counts of forgery after allegedly depositing two fake checks totaling $42,650.

A Sovereign Bank fraud investigator had contacted police detectives on July 2 to report that Becky L. Fath, 49, of 245 Broadway, had opened a bank account on June 2 and returned on June 18 to deposit the two allegedly counterfeit checks, according to a police report. Fath then allegedly withdrew $200 from a bank ATM that day.

The police subsequently secured a warrant for Fath’s arrest. Fath, who is serving an unrelated sentence in prison, appeared Aug. 15 in Newport District Court on the charges. She is scheduled to appear Sept. 25 in Superior Court.

In other recent police news, four local teenagers were cited early Monday morning for underage alcohol possession.

The police stopped a car driven by Jonathan J. Perry, 20, of 133 East Bourne Ave., in Tiverton, for speeding on Third Beach Road at about 1:20 a.m. Seven unopened beer containers were found in the car’s trunk.

The police cited Perry, along with Olivia N. Nace, 18, of 1150 Middle Rd., in Portsmouth, and two 17-year-olds, a boy and a girl, for underage alcohol possession. The four were later released to relatives and ordered to appear Sept. 16 in Municipal Court.
