Despite bankruptcy filing, Twin River still reels ’em in
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 24, 2009
LINCOLN — And the players played on.
While Twin River’s corporate owners, their bankers and state officials concentrated on the implications of the slot parlor’s Tuesday morning bankruptcy filing, the venue welcomed a steady stream of customers in the afternoon.
They were a discreet lot; none of nearly three dozen persons who were approached in the Twin River parking lot for comment on the filing was willing to be quoted by name. A few said it was their first visit; others said they didn’t want their employers or family members to know they had sneaked out for a visit. But none said the bankruptcy filing would have any effect on their plans to return.
The north parking lot, which has the easiest access from Twin River Road, was nearly full.
Inside, it seemed business as usual. Few of the banks of machines were missing players, and most had two or more. The cavernous hall was lit as much by the video-slot machine screens as by the overhead lights. Sound washed through the place; at one point it was the thumping bass rhythm in Marvin Gaye’s version of “Heard it Through the Grapevine” complementing the high-pitched pings and whistles from the video slots.
