Police on the lookout for suspect in Route 146 chase
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
The police have an arrest warrant for a driver who intentionally swerved into two cruisers on Route 146 and eventually eluded police after a long chase that ended on a median strip in Worcester, Mass., authorities said last night.
No one was injured during a pursuit that started around 1 p.m., the police said.
The chase began soon after Officer Kevin Murphy encountered a suspicious vehicle on School Street in Albion, said Sgt. Jack McRoberts.
As Murphy tried to stop it, the vehicle accelerated and sped away, taking Old River Road to Route 146 North, McRoberts said.
Along the way, Woonsocket police cruisers pulled up alongside the suspect vehicle in an attempt to identify the driver.
The motorist swerved into two of the police cars, McRoberts said.
The police followed the vehicle up Route 146 and into Worcester, he said.
In Worcester, the vehicle pulled into a median lane and came to a stop. The driver left the vehicle and fled on a foot, McRoberts said.
The driver, whom McRoberts declined to identify, was still at large last night after a search of the area assisted by Worcester police and Massachusetts State Police.
A passenger riding in the same vehicle was detained for questioning.
The driver faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, McRobert said.
