Local dancers to compete in Germany
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
NORTH SMITHFIELD — Dance Theatre of Rhode Island’s award-winning competitive dance team has won a coveted spot representing the United States as members of Team USA in the World Showdance Championships in Germany this fall.
Teams from more than 40 countries, including Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Russia and Switzerland, will compete in various categories of dance at the championships, sponsored by the International Dance Organization.
The Dance Theatre of Rhode Island-Team USA members include dancers ranging in age from 10 to 25 from Cumberland, Lincoln, North Smithfield and Woonsocket. The two jazz routines that were nominated and recently won the honor to compete were choreographed by Dance Theatre of Rhode Island director Jennifer Vecchio.
While the dancers will represent the United States at this international event, there is no public funding for the program. To help defray the considerable cost of traveling to Riesa, Germany, from Nov. 25 to 29, Dance Theatre of Rhode Island-Team USA will hold several fundraisers.
There will be twin car washes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; one at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Park Square, Woonsocket, and the other at Tedeschi Food Mart, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland.
A golf outing is set for Monday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Country Club.
And a “cow plop” bingo — that involves betting on the square of land you hope a cow will bless when nature calls — will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. John Vianney Church, Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland.
For more information about these events, see the Web site teamusa.weebly.com or contact the dance studio at dtri@verizon.net.
Individuals or companies interested in sponsoring the team, making a cash donation, or donating an item to be used in conjunction with fundraising, such as a penny social or raffle item, should contact the studio at dtri@verizon.net. Please include “fundraiser” in the e-mail title.
