07:24 AM EDT on Saturday, September 6, 2008
CENTRAL FALLS –– A man who allegedly robbed the Rite Aid pharmacy on Broad Street yesterday was arrested at gunpoint on Dexter Street in Cumberland, according to the police.
Edward Rodrigues, 45, of Newport, was caught after he climbed out of his car and led police officers from six departments on a foot chase.
Joseph P. Moran III, the Central Falls police chief, said officers from Central Falls, Lincoln, Cumberland, Attleboro, the state police and the Bristol County (Mass.) Sheriff’s Department took part.
The robbery took place at 1:51 p.m. Rodrigues, who reportedly displayed a gun, took an undetermined amount of cash from the store, then got into his car and drove north on Broad Street, Moran said.
He crossed into Cumberland, where his car was blocked by a Cumberland police cruiser. He tried to flee on foot.
Rodrigues was arrested by Central Falls Police Officer Joseph Tougas and Lincoln Police Officers Edward Krawetz and Kevin Marcoux, according to Moran and Lincoln Police Chief Brian Sullivan.
No one was hurt in the robbery. Rodrigues was being held in Central Falls pending arraignment on a charge of armed robbery, Moran said.
