Car rams Johnston house
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, July 6, 2008
JOHNSTON — A car crashed into a two-family house at noon on Friday, severely damaging the structure and requiring its residents to seek shelter elsewhere.
Steven Dileonardo, 48, of 2 Meadowbrook Drive, was arrested at his home for allegedly driving with a suspended license shortly after the accident at 87-89 Greenville Ave. The police said Dileonardo fled the scene after he plowed his 1998 Jeep Cherokee into the front of the multifamily house around noon.
No one was injured in the accident, but a town building official deemed the residence “unsafe for occupancy,” forcing its inhabitants to find another place to sleep, said Lt. Robert Menard.
Menard said it was unclear what caused the accident, or how fast the Jeep was traveling. According to the police report, Dileonardo said he suffered from a medical condition for which he was being treated, Menard said.
Dileonardo was released on a District Court summons and is scheduled to appear at Third District Court in Warwick on July 16.
