Mostly Democratic primaries Tuesday

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 5, 2008

Tuesday’s Democratic primary between former Mayor David S. Iwuc and incumbent Mayor Daniel J. McKee could decide the third round of the battle to be Cumberland’s mayor. There also are Democratic primaries for at large, District 1, District 3 and District 5 Town Council seats. The area’s only Republican primary is the race for the District 5 Town Council seat.

In Lincoln, the Democratic primary will decide whether Louis E. Azar, John Douglas Barr II or John J. Cullen will go on to challenge Republican incumbent T. Joseph Almond in the general election.

North Smithfield’s nonpartisan primary will winnow the field of four candidates — Ernest H. Alter, Donald P. Gagnon, Paulette D. Hamilton and incumbent Robert B. Lowe — to two candidates who will face off in November.

There are Democratic primaries for three at large seats on the Pawtucket City Council and for School Committee.

Johnston voters will decide Democratic primaries for the District 1, District 2, District 4 and District 5 Town Council seats as well as the District 4 School Committee seat.

In Burrillville, there is a Democratic primary for three nominations for Town Council.

There is a Democratic primary in one Senate district and in six House districts in the North region.
