The Narragansett Parks and Recreation Department is seeking applicants for its Junior Lifeguard Program.

Lifeguard program: The Narragansett Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for its USLA Junior Lifeguard Program. The first session will meet tomorrow, and July 1616, 23 and 30, with the second meeting July 31 and Aug. 7, 14 and 21, at the Narragansett Town Beach.

The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for children age 7 to 10, and 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. for ages 11 to 14, and will include basic lifesaving techniques and water safety. The fee is $45.

Lifeguards sought: URI’s Tootell Aquatic Center is looking for lifeguards and instructors to work 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with holidays and weekends off, through Aug. 1.

The pay is $10 an hour for lifeguards, and $10 or more per hour, depending on experience and certifications, for instructors. For information, call 874-5926.

Aquatics classes: The URI Recreation Service Center, in Mackal Field House, is taking registration for swim lessons running July 21 through 31. For information, call 874-5926.

Fishing days: The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association is conducting “Family Fun Fishing Days” this Friday and next, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Carolina, when volunteers from the association and Trout Unlimited will help children learn the basics of fishing.

A fly fishing class is scheduled for July24 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Barberville Dam’s handicapped accessible fishing pier.

Blacksmith camp: South County Museum in Narragansett will conduct two, three-day blacksmith camps, for children age 8 to 14, July 9 through 11 and Aug. 6 through 8, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Outdoor programs: The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is conducting nature hikes at its Kettle Pond Visitor Center, 50 Bend Rd., Charlestown, Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The Dreamworks movie Over the Hedge will be screened Saturday at 10 a.m., and a craft day is scheduled for Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Children’s concert: The Sidewalk Stompers will play for children and their parents at The Towers, 35 Ocean Rd., Narragansett, tonight at 7. Admission is free.

Photography classes: Local wildlife photographer Tom Tetzner will teach “Digital Photography for Young Wildlife Photographers,” open to children age 8 and up, beginning today and meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cross’ Mills Public Library, 4417 Old Post Rd., Charlestown.

The six weekly classes will cover equipment and operation, lens and focusing, composition and field experience. Digital cameras are required. To register, call 364-6211.

Reading program events: As part of the statewide summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” local libraries are hosting programs open to children in grades 1 through 6.

The North Kingstown Free Library, 100 Boone St., North Kingstown, is looking for students in grades 8 and up to help younger children with the “Catch the Reading Bug” summer reading program. For information, call 294-3306, ext. 5.

Storyteller Christopher “Kavi” Carbone will present “Spiders, Mosquitoes & Bugs — Oh My!” at the Davisville Free Library, 481 Davisville Rd., North Kingstown, next Monday morning at 10. For information, call Sarah Ornstein at 884-5524.

The Kingston Free Library, 2605 Kingstown Rd., Kingston, is hosting the following programs, all at 11 a.m., as part of the program:

Bug catcher craft, tomorrow; “Spiders, Mosquitoes & Bugs — Oh My!” with Christopher “Kavi” Carbone, July 16; “Animal Experiences” with Dave Marchetti, July 30; crafts, Aug. 6; and Butterfly Release Day, Aug. 13.

The Robert Beverly Hale Library, off of Route 1 in Wakefield, will host the following activities:

Entomophagist David Gracer will discuss cultures where insects are part of the food supply, Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library, 35 Kingstown Rd., Narragansett.

Reading to animals: The Peace Dale Public Library and Kingston Free Library are teaming up with the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island to take part in the program “Paws to Read,” which provides opportunities for elementary school children to practice their reading skills by reading to registered therapy dogs.

Sessions are scheduled for 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., today, and July 15, 22 and 29 at the Peace Dale Library, 1057 Kingstown Rd., Peace Dale, and July 14, and 21 at the Kingston Free Library, 2605 Kingstown Rd., Kingston. Family movies: The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring weekly movies on the beach at the following locations in Misquamicut:

Atlantic Beach Park, 321 Atlantic Ave., Surf’s Up, today, Bee Movie, July 22, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Aug. 5, and The Water Horse, Aug. 19; Sandy Shore Motel, 149 Atlantic Ave., The Last Mimzy, July 15, and Daddy Day Camp, Aug. 12; and Atlantic Pizza, 145 Atlantic Ave., Shrek the Third, July 29. Each begins at 8:45 p.m., with The Water Horse at 8:30.

Admission is free, and the rain date is the following night.

Vacation Bible camps: Children in kindergarten through grade 6 may sign up for a vacation Bible school of lessons, summer Olympics-style games, crafts, snacks and music, to be conducted at West Kingston Baptist Church, 263 Waites Corner Rd., West Kingston, July 21 through 25.

Theatre/arts camp: West Kingston’s Courthouse Center for the Arts is taking registration for its Theater and Creative Arts Camp, running July 7 through Aug. 1 for children age 5and over.

Classes include drawing, painting, bead making, textile art, concrete sculpture and environmental art, as well as two, two-week theater camp programs; the first session will include Katz and Chicago, with the second Pocahontas and High School Musical. For information, call 782-1018.

Day camps: The Hopkinton Recreation Department is taking registration for the following programs:

Soccer camp, July 21 through 25; dramatic arts camp, July 14 through 18; “Hoop Academy,” Aug. 4 through 8; and tennis, Aug. 11 through 15. For information, call 377-7795.

The Richmond Recreation Department is taking registration for its summer camp, which runs from through Aug. 8, meeting weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Charlestown Elementary School.

Children in kindergarten through grade 6 will take part in crafts, games and sports, and attend special performances. Fees are $100, or $150 for two or more children from the same family, with scholarships available. Registration forms are available at Richmond Town Hall, 5 Town House Rd., Richmond.

Indoor gym: The South Kingstown Parks and Recreation Department sponsors indoor gym sessions for children age 4 and under, with parents, at the Neighborhood Guild, 325 Columbia St., Peace Dale, each Monday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Fees are $1 for adults, 50 cents for children, free to those under 1. For information, call 789-9301.

Open story times: The Watch Hill Improvement Society Library hosts story times for all ages each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., and Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

Westerly High School students lead story times for children age 3 and up, each Monday at 1:15 p.m., and Friday at 10 a.m., at the Westerly Public Library, 44 Broad St., Westerly.

Children may bring their Teddy bears and “drop in” to half-hour story times each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., except school vacation week, at Clark Memorial Library, 7 Pinehurst Drive, Carolina.

The Willett Free Library, on Ferry Road in Saunderstown, conducts preschool story hours each Thursday afternoon at 5. For information, call 294-2081.

Story time for children is conducted Monday and Friday at 10:15 a.m. at the Davisville Free Library, 481 Davisville Rd., North Kingstown, with stories and crafts are appropriate for ages 2 to 5.

The Jamestown Library, 26 North Rd., Jamestown, conducts “pajama storytimes” for children age 4 through 8, Tuesday night at 7, through July 8.

Hope Valley’s Langworthy Library, 24 Spring St., conducts story hours each Wednesday and Friday, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Registration for summer story hours at the Cross’ Mills Public Library may be made at the library, 4417 Old Post Rd., Charlestown, or by calling 364-6211. Sessions meet Tuesday morning at 10 for ages 3, 4 and 5; Wednesday morning at 10 for ages 12 to 23 months; Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 for children in grades 1 through 4; and, for two-year-olds, music and stories, Thursday morning at 10.

Church story hour: The West Kingston Baptist Church, 263 Waites Corner Rd., West Kingston, is conducting weekly story hours for pre-school-age children and younger, with their mothers, led by Ruth Mlyniec and meeting Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30.

Each session of “Amma’s Story Time,” so named because “Amma” is a term for grandmother in several languages, will have a theme, and will feature a children’s book, a Bible story, an activity and snack. For information, call 789-0523.

Book groups: The Peace Dale Library conducts a book discussion group for students in grades 6 through 8 the first Thursday of the month from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. A group for children in grades 4 through 6 meets the last Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.

Children in grades 4 through 6 may join a book club at the Robert Beverly Hale Library. For information, call 783-5386.

The Cross’ Mills Public Library hosts “Reading Explorers,” which meets the fourth Thursday of the month, from 6 to 7 p.m., for children age 9 to 12.

The Jamestown Philomenian Library, 26 North Rd., Jamestown, hosts a book discussion group for children in grades 4 through 6, and their parents, the first Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The teen book group will meet Friday at 3:30 p.m. to discuss The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, a National Book award winner for 2009, by award-winning Spokane Indian author Sherman Alexie.

Sing-alongs: The Hopkinton Recreation Department sponsors sing-alongs for toddlers, accompanied by an adult, each Wednesday morning at 10 at its activities center in Crandall Field, Ashaway.

Anime club: The Jamestown Library, 26 North Rd., Jamestown, hosts an Anime club for teenagers to view and discuss animated Japanese films, meeting the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Chess club: Clark Memorial Library, 7 Pinehurst Drive, Carolina, hosts a chess club, meeting the first and third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m., for children age 6 and up.

Knitting: The Westerly Public Library, 44 Broad St., Westerly hosts a knitting club for children in grades 6 through 12 each Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. Yarn will be provided, but kids should bring their own knitting needles. For information, call 596-2877, ext. 2.
