Police search campground for missing man

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 5, 2008

GLOCESTER — Local and state police yesterday searched the 100-acre campground where Mark Harrington, 52, was said to be heading last Friday, but found no sign of the town resident or his car, according to Glocester Capt. Joseph Mattera.

Harrington, of 36 Spring Grove Rd., told his family that he was going camping alone at the George Washington Memorial Camping Area on Friday and would be back Sunday morning. When he didn’t return, his wife, Donna, contacted the police.

Mattera said that members of the Glocester Police Department, the state police with their K-9 unit, and the state Department Environment Management divisions of forestry and enforcement conducted an “extensive search” of the grounds, which are in West Glocester, near the Connecticut border.

Glocester police on Wednesday searched a portion of the campground. There was no record of Harrington checking into George Washington or two other campgrounds in Glocester, the police said.

Harrington’s family said he had never been on a camping trip alone and only brought a sleeping bag with him. He did not have a cell phone or credit card with him.

Harrington, a day trader who works from home, was driving a black, four-door Honda Element with Rhode Island plates 850-966. He has short brown and gray hair, blue eyes and wears glasses. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and brown shoes.

Glocester police are urging anyone with information to call the department at (401) 568-2533.
