Glocester woman charged after crash
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, July 4, 2008
GLOCESTER — A local woman crashed a pickup truck into three vehicles on Chopmist Hill Road on Wednesday evening, the police said. There were no serious injuries from the incident.
Deborah Silverthorne, 49, of Glocester, was arrested and charged with one count of driving under the influence, one count of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and one count of leaving the scene of an accident. She was also charged with refusing to submit to a breath test, a civil charge.
Police say Silverthorne, of 34 Chopmist Hill Rd., took her husband’s 1999 Dodge pickup truck after an argument. Backing down the driveway at a high rate of speed, she slammed the truck into a parked 1994 Cadillac sedan owned by her son.
She headed south on the road, still in reverse, until the truck collided with a car also heading south on the road. The 19-year-old driver of that car, a 1997 Toyota sedan, and his 20-year-old passenger, were not hurt.
Losing control of the truck, Silverthorne ended up in the driveway at 31 Chopmist Hill Rd., where it crashed into a parked pickup truck and a cargo trailer, both of which sustained moderate damage.
Silverthorne, who was not hurt, fled the scene of the accident on foot and was apprehended by the police shortly after at her house. She was held overnight at the police station and arraigned in District Court, Providence, yesterday.
She pleaded not guilty before Judge Michael Higgins and was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bond. Silverthorne is scheduled to return to court July 10. She is also scheduled to be arraigned in the state Traffic Tribunal in Cranston on July 11 for the civil charge.
