Police break up party, but no arrests are made
01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 24, 2008
NORTH KINGSTOWN — Parents of nine teenagers got a call from police over the weekend to pick up their children from a party that was broken up at 560 Dry Bridge Rd.
Officers responding to a tip of possible underage drinking Friday night observed numerous cars parked near the house and could hear laughter inside. The officers heard scrambling sounds after they knocked, Capt. Charles Brennan said yesterday.
When the door was opened, by a 17-year-old from North Kingstown, officers could smell alcohol and saw teens running out the back, Brennan said. Beer cans and bottles were evident but no alcohol was found.
All but two of the teens, ranging in age from 15 to 17, were rounded up, Brennan said. Their parents were asked to pick them up and drive them home. No one was charged. No other incidents were reported, Brennan said.
The North Kingstown police have received part of a $450,000 federal substance-abuse prevention grant to pay for the party patrol, which consists of two officers working nights, in an effort to cut down on underage drinking.
Anyone with information about underage drinking is asked to call a confidential tip line at (401) 294-3316, ext. 411, or send an e-mail to: tips@northkingstown.org.
Urgent calls should go directly to North Kingstown police at (401) 294-3311.
Parents who are going on vacation and leaving a teen at home can fill out a short form at the police station, 8166 Post Rd., asking officers to check on the house while they’re gone.
