Distinguished guests: A Cape Verdean cultural bazaar and book fair was held Sunday at the Catholic Charities Teen Center at St. Peter Church, Dorchester, Mass.
Guests from Cape Verde included Manuel Veiga, the Cape Verdean minister of culture; and Joaquim Morais, director of the National Library and Book Institute of Cape Verde. The event, free and open to the public, was organized by the Cape Verdean Creole Institute and sponsored by the Catholic Charities Teen Center.
Museum receives donation: The Cape Verdean Museum received an anonymous donation of historic maps. The donation is an extensive collection of historical maps relating to the history of Cape Verde, some dating to the 1600s. The museum also acquired an enormous collection of books dating to the early 1900s.
The printed material includes photography books and cookbooks. In addition to history and fiction books, the collection includes PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) newsletters from 1970 to 1973 written during the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and films relating to the history and culture of Cape Verde and Cape Verdeans in America.
Given by an anonymous donor, the maps, books, films and other items are a significant addition to the museum. This is a non-circulation collection available to the public in the museum’s reading room, 1003 Waterman Ave., East Providence, during regular hours of operation.
The exhibit is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free; donations are accepted.
Arrangements can be made for groups of 10 or more by calling the museum at (401) 228-7292, or by e-mailing the museum at info@cvmuseum.org.

Book signing: The museum will host a book signing on Saturday, May 10, by author Dawn Blake Souza. The book, In Search of Chestnuts, a piece of local history and social commentary, examines New Bedford’s history and explores the coming of age of a woman — the racism, sexism, and classism that Souza triumphed over.
The exhibit will open at noon and a reading by the author will be held at 1 and again at 3 p.m.
For information, call the museum at (401) 228-7292 or Denise Oliveira at (401) 222-4137.
Anniversary celebration: In honor of Cape Verdean Children’s 4th Anniversary, Steve Baptiste, owner of Pier View Restaurant, sponsored an afternoon of food and music at 201 Onset Ave., Onset, Mass., on Sunday.
The Cape Verdean Children’s objective is to reach out and serve Cape Verdean children with humanitarian support delivered directly to the family and/or guardian of that child to ensure that the child has proper nourishment and is attending school as required.
