Pickup mix-up irks residents

EAST PROVIDENCE — A holiday miscommunication left trash uncollected on Rumford’s streets and sidewalks early this week.
The normal pickup is Monday for that section of the city, but most communities observed Saturday’s Veterans Day on Monday, and Rhode Island Resource Recovery, which runs the Johnston landfill, informed city officials to plan accordingly because it was closing the facility that day.
Meanwhile, the city Department of Public Works sends a mailing to all residents at the beginning of the year to explain the timing of trash pickups when a holiday conflicts with the normal schedule. It was supposed to list a Saturday pickup for the Veterans Day weekend, but that was accidentally omitted from this year’s reminder card.
“Unfortunately, the card was incorrect,” DPW Director Steve Coutu said. “We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”
A news release also didn’t get published in The Journal last week, which further confused residents.
Some put out their trash Friday for a Saturday pickup, but the majority put their garbage out Sunday night for Monday. Saturday, it was collected; Monday, it wasn’t.
The complaints came to the DPW office Monday, so a truck was redeployed to Rumford yesterday afternoon to pick up any trash still outside. Coutu said it did not cost the city any additional money.
