E. Providence man arrested for underage alcohol possession
01:00 AM EST on Monday, December 1, 2008
BARRINGTON — A caller who reported suspicious activity in the area of Haines Park led to the arrest late Friday of an East Providence man on charges of underage possession of alcoholic.
David J. Crossman, 20, of 78B Washington Ave., was arrested just after 11 p.m., when police received a call that four males had gotten out of a car at Park Avenue and were heading toward the park, with alcohol.
The four were discovered by police near the benches close to the baseball field. They included a 20- and 22-year-old from East Providence and a 20-year-old from Foote Street in Barrington.
When officers spotted a six pack of Bud Ice along with an open can of Natural Ice, Crossman said the alcohol was his, and that he had purchased it from a liquor store on Willett Avenue in East Providence. He also claimed responsibility for a bottle of Captain Morgan rum found at the scene.
He is due in Providence District Court Wednesday.
That was just one of several alcohol-related arrests in town over the past week.
On Wednesday, Carlo A. Martino, 43, of 10 Colonial Ave., Barrington, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after he was stopped in the area of Linden and Sowams Roads just after 6 p.m. Wednesday. Police found him because of, once again, a phone tip.
He was allegedly seen swerving on New Meadow Road. He declined to take a breath test after consulting with his lawyer.
Just before 11 p.m. that same night, Peter S. Eklund, 19, of 20 Martin Ave., was also arrested for driving under the influence after he was spotted speeding and he failed field sobriety tests.
And on Sunday just before 4 a.m., Robert Loffredo, 27, of 939 Chopmist Hill Rd., Scituate, was arrested for driving under the influence after his Jeep was stopped for going 16 miles per hour over the speed limit in the vicinity of County Road and Lincoln Avenue.
He was also seen driving in and out of lanes.
