House of the Week: A French provincial touch in East Greenwich

This home at 441 Tillinghast Rd. in East Greenwich makes a powerful first impression. You start at a wrought-iron gate off Tillinghast Road and drive up a cobblestoned drive, passing by a barn/greenhouse before going over a bridge that spans a small brook. The drive, which has lights triggered by motion sensors, ends in a large circle, paved in brick, with a working fountain at the center.
The French provincial house itself is entered through a pair of carved wooden doors, imported from Brazil, which lead into a high entrance hall with a marble floor, dominated by a big chandelier and a curving staircase with elaborate iron balusters supporting the handrail.
Owner Chris Wolferseder, who bought the house about five years ago, said he was attracted to the property’s grounds, which extend over 4.6 acres, and the high quality of the house construction. “The grounds were spectacular. The grounds really grabbed me,” he said. “And everything was built well, there was a lot of attention to detail,” he said.
The house was built in 1998. Wolferseder, an account executive in the mortgage business, said he is planning to relocate, probably to the West Coast.
To the right of the entryway is a formal dining room, with a circular nook, surrounded by windows, at the front end. “It’s a good area to read a book,” Wolferseder said. The main part of the room, with walls colored a chocolate brown, has a large chandelier overhead. At the back end of the dining room is a seating area with windows that look out into the backyard.
The kitchen has a floor of large, cream-colored tiles and features a large pantry, central island with sink, a big pantry and high-end appliances that include a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Viking stovetop and Dacor double oven. The kitchen leads to the breakfast area, which has glass doors that lead out to the pool area in the backyard.
Off the kitchen is the TV/family room, with a high cathedral ceiling, and built-in cabinets for video and audio equipment. The floor is hardwood in an interesting dark-and-light diamond pattern, with the walls painted a deep red. Wolferseder said he was trying to create the feel of a Tuscan villa for the interior of the house, so he repainted some of the rooms in rich colors, adding a glaze to get a deeper, more textured effect.
The rest of the first floor includes two half baths, two small rooms now being used as offices, and a doorway leading out to a three-car garage.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has his and hers walk-in closets with skylights. Down a small hallway, also illuminated with a skylight, is a balcony that overlooks the backyard pool area. The master bath has a heated tile floor, a whirlpool tub, and a large double-headed shower behind a curving wall of glass brick. The toilet is tucked inside its own water closet.
The second floor also includes three more bedrooms, another full bath, also with whirlpool tub, and a laundry room that has a washer/dryer, sink and built-in ironing board. Entrance to the attic is through pull-down stairs in the laundry room ceiling.
The basement at 441 Tillinghast is unfinished, but it is clean and dry, with high ceilings, plenty of light, its own fireplace and a door to the backyard. Wolferseder said the area could be converted into usable living or working space relatively easily. The home is heated by gas, and has three separate heating zones.
The backyard of the house is dominated by a large in-ground pool surrounded by flagstones. A stone arch, with another wrought-iron gate, leads from the driveway into the pool area. A waterfall cascades across the top of another stone archway immediately adjacent to the pool.
Wolferseder built a poolhouse on the far side of the pool, with a roofed indoor/outdoor lounge area and a flat-screen TV visible on the exterior wall of the poolhouse. “This is my dining room, my TV room in the summertime,” Wolferseder said as he sat on one of the couches. Inside the poolhouse, there’s a full kitchen, bathroom, changing area and a dryer for wet towels and bathing suits.
To one side of the poolhouse is a swing set with ladder and slides. (Wolferseder doesn’t have children, so the swing set goes with the house.)
Besides the poolhouse, there are two other outbuildings on the property.
One, just off the circular drive, is a two-car garage that’s currently being used for storage, although it could be converted into another use by the property’s next owner. Closer to the entry gate off Tillighast Road is a barn/greenhouse, with a fenced corral behind it. This structure has fallen into some disrepair, but it could be made usable once again. The property is zoned for horses.
The house at 441 Tillinghast Rd. is for sale at $1.5 million. There are four bedrooms, two full baths and two half baths. The house consists of 4,100 square feet of space on 4.62 acres. Real estate taxes are $14,300. The agent is Lori Joyal, (401) 742-1225, of Lila Delman Real Estate, Lori.Joyal@LilaDelman.com.
