Town meeting fails to attract quorum
09:45 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 10, 2009
EAST GREENWICH — For the ninth year in a row, the Financial Town Meeting failed to achieve a quorum, allowing the Town Council’s $47-million budget for fiscal 2010 to become law by default.
When the meeting was called to order at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, only 95 people had checked in at East Greenwich High School, far fewer than the required 250. By 7:30 p.m., the deadline for reaching a quorum, only 229 voters had arrived.
The new budget, which takes effect July 1, is 0.05 percent lower than the current budget, with no pay raises for anyone except for step increases. The schools budget will increase by 0.65 percent. The municipal budget will be 3.61 percent lower than the current fiscal year’s.
