The winners of this year’s Letters About Literature competition were announced at the annual meeting of the Rhode Island Center for the Book. Julia Zubiago, of East Greenwich, won top honors for Level I (grades 4 to 6). Honorable Mention awards were won by Andrew Miner, also of East Greenwich, and Sophia Wright, of Cranston.
The Touro Fraternal Association, Cranston, recently donated 14 automatic external defibrillators to 14 synagogues in Rhode Island. The association has now donated a total of 33 AEDs throughout the state.
The Rhode Island Foundation has awarded $1,500 scholarships through its Cataract Fire Company No. 2 Scholarship Fund to four Warwick residents. The students, their high schools, and the colleges they will attend in the fall are: Aimee Bishop, Warwick Veterans Memorial High School, Rivier College, Nashua, N.H.; Ashley Matteson, Toll Gate High School, Rhode Island College; Rachel Traghella, Pilgrim High School, Rhode Island College; William Campbell, Pilgrim High, Bryant University.
The Providence Journal recently announced the winners of its 24th-annual Scholastic Journalism Critique & Competition. Deering Middle School, West Warwick, won top honors for its paper, For Your Information, in the Middle/Junior High School Division. This is the third year in a row the school has won top honors.
Also in the Middle/Junior High School Division, Deering student Jessica Deburgo took second place in the writing category.
In the High School Division, the area winners were: Lauren Pannone, Cranston High School West, third place in the news story category; Lauren Mojkowski, Cranston High School West, third place in the in-depth reporting category; Sara Pollard, Cranston High School West, third place in the iIllustration/comic/editorial cartoon category, and Kristin Orabone, Cranston High School West, second place in the photojournalism category.
