Westerly
Story aided campaign against torture
It was gratifying to see recognition of the national Religious Campaign Against Torture in the excellent article by Donita Naylor in the July 1 Journal. Her acknowledgement of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture by the Westerly Religious Society of Friends and Providence Friends Meeting (Quakers) and Westminster Unitarian Church in East Greenwich is greatly appreciated.
It might interest readers to know that there is also a worldwide organization, Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture, which has had local participation. In association with ACAT, Pax Christi and St. Joseph Church of Pawtucket hosted an ecumenical prayer vigil June 28. This was part of an all-night vigil which started in France and circumnavigated the globe throughout the night.
Hopefully, as more people become aware of the torture that is occurring in many countries throughout the world, they will speak out and bring an end to this horrific practice.
