Cranston man to serve 5 years for drunken-driving accident
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, October 10, 2008
A Cranston man who injured five people in a drunken-driving crash on Wellington Avenue a year ago has been sentenced to five years in prison with an additional five years of probation.
Kyle B. Josephson, 41, pleaded no contest in Superior Court this week to six felony charges: two counts of driving under the influence with serious bodily injury resulting and four counts of reckless driving with personal injury resulting.
The state dismissed four other charges in exchange for his plea.
Josephson was southbound on Wellington Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2007, with three passengers in his 2005 Saturn sport-utility vehicle, when he struck a car turning left onto Wellington from the Milford Street Bridge, according to the state attorney general’s office.
The impact sent the second vehicle, whose four occupants were not seriously injured, south into Wellington’s northbound lane.
Josephson’s vehicle, meanwhile, slid into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a 1998 Toyota sedan driven by a 63-year-old Cranston woman.
The woman suffered multiple compound fractures in her arms and legs. Her granddaughter, then 13, suffered broken legs and a fractured jaw.
Three of the passengers in Josephson’s vehicle also sustained injuries. The front-seat passenger suffered a broken leg. One backseat passenger broke his leg and hip and another suffered a serious laceration to his forehead.
The Cranston police accident reconstruction team estimated that Josephson was driving 68 mph in a 25-mile-per-hour zone.
His blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit, according to the attorney general’s office.
