The U.S. Small Business Administration will hold a free workshop on How to Start Your Own Business today, April 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, Slade’s Ferry Business Center, 3280 Post Rd., Warwick. There will be information on the requirements for starting a small business, including recommendations from the Internal Revenue Service, and the importance of having an accountant and lawyer in the startup process. The opening of “Motivated! A Multi-Media Extravaganza by Providence Area Artists” will be held today, April 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Warwick Museum of Art, 3259 Post Rd., Warwick. The exhibit will run through Saturday, April 28. The 27th-annual Ocean State Grand National Karate Championships, presented by the Don Rodrigues Karate Academy of Warwick, will be held today through Sunday, April 13-15, at the Crowne Plaza hotel, Route 5, Warwick. Today’s event runs from 5 to 10:30 p.m., and admission is $10. Tomorrow’s and Sunday’s events run from 8:30 to 3 p.m.; tickets are $20 for general admission and $30 for ringside. The 36th anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated with an Earth Day Family Festival on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Warwick Mall. The Natural Resources Conservation Service is seeking proposals to acquire conservation easements on farms from local, state and federally recognized tribal governments and nongovernmental organizations. About $2.8 million in federal funds is available this year to protect working farms through the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is sponsoring a birding expedition to the Barn Island Wildlife Management Area in Little Narragansett Bay, Connecticut, on Saturday, April 28. The habitat includes 540 acres of deciduous forest, 290 acres of tidal marshes, open salt water, four waterfowl impoundments, coastal scrub woodlands and thickets.
