Police identify Coventry couple found in home
01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 22, 2008
COVENTRY — The police identified a Coventry woman found dead in her home Saturday, and her husband, who was found with her and is in critical condition at Kent Hospital, in Warwick.
A spokeswoman from the state medical examiner’s office said yesterday that the department is still determining the cause of death for Shelly M. Gardner, 34, who was found shortly before noon Saturday in a bedroom inside the couple’s home at 2333 Flat River Rd., near Poor Farm Road.
Her husband, Ronald L. Gardner Jr., 33, was found “unresponsive,” according to the police. He was taken by Central Coventry Rescue to Kent Hospital. The police would not give any other details about him, but described his condition as “grave.”
Coventry police Sgt. John Shields said the police were dispatched that morning to the multifamily dwelling to do a well-being check after a relative called the police on Saturday, asking that they check on the family.
The police are investigating the matter. Shields said there were no weapons removed from the home, but he declined to comment further pending a decision from the medical examiner’s office.
Ronald L. Gardner Jr. is the son of the late Ronald L. Gardner Sr., who was a retired deputy state marshal for the Rhode Island State Marshal’s Office. The elder Gardner, 58, died last month.
