Pawtucket man charged in fatal shooting in Central Falls
12:54 AM EDT on Monday, April 28, 2008
CENTRAL FALLS — The police charged a 19-year-old man with murder yesterday, a day after a violent confrontation in Jenks Park in which both the suspect and the victim fired gunshots at each other.
The police identified the deceased as Helder Tomar, 19, of 7 Harvey St., Pawtucket, and the suspect as Anthony Strobert, 19, of 49 Pacific St.
After receiving a report of a shooting at 4:28 p.m. Saturday, the police went into Jenks Park near Fletcher Street and found Tomar on the ground. While Cumberland police were transporting him to Rhode Island Hospital, the police received a report from Memorial Hospital at 4:45 p.m. that another shooting victim — Strobert — had been brought to the hospital by friends and that he, too, was being taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
Detectives said that as best they can determine from several witnesses, both Tomar and Strobert were in the park fighting when Tomar pulled a handgun from his waistband. In the ensuing struggle, Tomar fired several shots and the two men struggled for possession of the pistol.
Strobert was struck by one bullet and Tomar was ultimately shot and killed by Strobert, according to a report released by Col. Joseph P. Moran III, the chief of police.
Moran said detectives yesterday were continuing to pursue other witness accounts and there is a possibility that there may be other charges brought against other individuals who were at the shooting. Strobert, who was listed in stable condition yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital, was charged with murder after the police learned that Tomar was dead.
