Community Brief

Open house and yard sale: Burrillville Historical and Preservation Society will hold its seventh annual open house and yard sale Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bridgeton School, 16 Laurel Hill Ave. The yard sale will be held under a tent on the front lawn, and will include a book and bake sale. The open house will feature tours of the school. Old photos and artifacts will be on display and the public will have access to research materials. There will be continuous showings of historic Burrillville videos. For more information, call (401) 568-8449.

Recreation Department

The ninth annual certified 5K Snakes Alive Road Race, will be held Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (walkers 10:30 a.m.), next to Bank of America, Pascoag Main Street. Professional timing will be conducted the day of the race. Age categories for men and women are as follows: 19 and under; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69; and 70 and over. A prize of $200 to the course record breaker, along with $200 for first place; $100 for second place; and $75 for third place with be awarded to the top three finishers overall (to be split if both men’s and women’s records are set). Trophies will be given to the top winners in each age category for men and women. Advanced registration is preferred at a discounted fee of $15 per person online at www.needtorace.com or for the fee of $18 by contacting the Parks and Recreation Department. Registration will be accepted the day of the race at a cost of $20 per person.

The Parks and Recreation Department is taking registration for Saturday art classes. Classes for students ages 5 to 15 will be held Oct. 18. “Young Artist Workshops” for ages 5 to 7 will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. “Exploring Art” for ages 8 to 15 will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The cost is $9 and $12, and includes all materials.

Square dancing lessons will be offered on Sundays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 19, with dances held one Saturday a month from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center. The cost is $5 per person. For more information, call Lori Morin, (401) 568-6728.

Library Programs

Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library, 100 Tinkham Lane, will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. This is a scheduled closing and no materials are due to be returned on this date.

A workshop on how to complete the fall clean-up for your garden will be held at the library Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. The workshop will be led by URI Master Gardener Ellie Menard. Participants will also find out how to mulch for the winter, plant bulbs and take care of shrubs, trees, roses, and the lawn in autumn. The program is free and open to the public.
