BURRILLVILLE — Voters here pulled for change on the Town Council last night, electing four new members. But they chose familiar faces on the School Committee, returning all four incumbents to the board.

In an unexpected upset, maverick Town Council challenger Kevin M. Blais, who has demanded a new era of open government in town, appeared to be the top vote getter, according to figures available from the Board of Elections last night.

Joining him on the council are newcomers John Michael Karmozyn Jr., an independent; Norman C. Mainville, a Democrat; and Republican Cynthia L. Roe, who ran on similar platforms of change. At 10:30 p.m., however, only two votes separated Roe from fellow challenger Newton B. Stevens, which leaves open the possibility of a recount.

Long-term incumbents Ronald E. Faford, a Democrat, and Republican William A. Andrews were ousted from the seven-member council.

In fact, popular council chairman Wallace F. Lees, was the only incumbent candidate reelected to the seven-member board.

In the School Committee race, chairwoman Mary Margaret Karmozyn, and members Paul J. Couture, Scott Moore and Raymond J. Trinque all won another term on the seven-member nonpartisan board.

Karmozyn’s reelection will make for an interesting husband-wife duo in town politics, now that her husband, John Michael Karmozyn Jr. has been elected to the Town Council.
