Recreation Department offers Winter Classes

Burrillville Recreation Department is offering several programs this winter.

A series of workshops entitled “Above & Beyond 50’s” will be held on Tuesdays starting in the New Year. These complimentary workshops are scheduled to include “Keeping up with Technology,” the first Tuesday of each month; “Cooking for One or Two” the second Tuesday of each month; “Floral Arranging” the third Tuesday of each month; and “Body Beautiful” the fourth Tuesday of each month. Workshops will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center.

“Wunderkind Theatrical Workshops” for children will include theater games and activities, and are designed to encourage imaginative play, creativity, and teamwork. Workshops will be held Wednesdays beginning Jan. 7 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. for ages 5 to 6 at the A.T. Levy School cafeteria; Fridays beginning Jan. 9 from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. for ages 7 to 10 at the Callahan Elementary gymnasium; and Mondays beginning Jan. 5 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. for ages 11 to 13 at Burrillville Middle School. A yoga program for adults, at beginner and advanced levels, will be held. Classes will be held at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center on Sundays from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and Callahan Elementary School gymnasium on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The cost is $48. Ballroom dancing will take place the first three Fridays of each month. The next session will begin Dec. 5 from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center. The program includes the American Waltz, Fox-Trot, Tango, Swing, Cha-cha, and Rumba. The cost is $35. Call Fran Golombiewski (401) 333-2623 to register.

One on One Basketball, an after school basketball session, will be held at the Callahan Elementary School and Steere Farm Elementary School. Callahan Elementary will have a start date of Dec. 3 and Steere Farm Elementary will begin Dec. 4. Each one-hour clinic takes place from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. for ten-weeks, at a cost of $75. Art Classes for Kids will be available for ages 5 to 7 at A.T. Levy School each Wednesday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 7 to Feb. 11; ages 8 and up at Callahan Elementary School each Monday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 5 to Feb. 23; and ages 8 and up at Steere Farm Elementary School each Thursday from 3:10 to 4:30 p.m., Jan. 29 to March 12. The cost is $55. Classes are also offered at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center on Saturdays, Dec. 13, Jan. 17, Feb. 14, and March 21, from 11 a.m. to noon for ages 4 to 7 at a cost of $9 per class, and from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for ages 8 and up at a cost of $12 per class. Learn Well Foundations classes for children in kindergarten to grade 3 will be held at the Callahan Elementary School gymnasium on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 per four week session. For more information, or to register, call Jen Bergin (401) 527-9355.

Children’s dance classes include “Mom and Me” for toddlers to age 2 ½.; “Fun Dance” for ages 3 to 6; “Hip/Hop” for ages 13 and up; “Hip Hop/ Jazz” for ages 7 to 12; “Pre-Ballet” for ages 3 to 4; “Pre-Tap” ages 3 to 4; “Ballet/Tap” ages 5 to 9. New this year is a “Modified Class” for special needs children to give them an opportunity to learn with extra attention focusing on their individual needs. All classes will be held at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center. The cost is $20 a month for 30 minute classes; $25 a month for 45 minute classes; and $30 a month for 60 minute classes.

Square dancing lessons are held Sundays from 7 to 9:30 p.m. with dances held one Saturday each month from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center. The cost is $5. For more information, call Lori Morin (401) 568-6728.

Tai-Chi is held at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center on Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $80; $50 for seniors and students. For more information, call David Tymecki (401) 568-9835.

Senior Fitness is offered to Burrillville senior citizens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Burrillville Community Recreation Center.

Fencing will take place at the A. T. Levy School gymnasium on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The cost is $20 for students, and $40 for adults.

Burrillville Extended Care Division of the Parks and Recreation Department offers its Burrillville Middle School After School Assistance Program (ASAP) to middle school age students from 2 to 6 p.m. The program includes homework assistance, snacks and other activities at a cost of $5 per day if picked up by 5:15 p.m., and an additional $2 if picked up after 5:15 p.m. For more information, call (401) 568-1356.
