Land Matters Walk & Talk: Peter Forbes will present “Translating the Soul of the Land,” Thursdayat 6:30 p.m. at the Newport City Hall, Broadway, Newport, as part of the Aquidneck Land Trust Conservation Speaker Series. It is free.

BARRINGTON

Massage therapy: The Bayside YMCA, 70 West St., will offer massage therapy, with two massage therapists on staff. Tom Gontarek will offer a free chair massage today from 1 to 3 p.m., and Kristin Dalbec will offer massage Nov. 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. and Nov. 21 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Rate for a one-hour massage is $50 or $25 for a 30-minute massage. Concert: The “Classic Winds” Woodwind Quintet will give a free concert, “Mozart and Friends,” tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Barrington Public Library. Community School trip: “American Splendors: Hudson River School Masterworks from the Wadsworth Athenaeum” is the focus of a Barrington Community School daytrip to Hartford, offered in cosponsorship with the Pembroke Club, Nov. 16.

BRISTOL

Royal talk: Clark Hulse, curator of the “Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend” traveling exhibit on display at Roger Williams University, will discuss the “Virgin Queen” and the images featured in the exhibit today at 5 p.m. in room 157 of the Feinstein College of Arts and Sciences Building on the Bristol campus at One Old Ferry Road. Hulse’s talk is part of a month-long exhibition about Elizabeth I, and is free and open to the public.

Garden Club: The Bristol Garden Club will meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Burnside Building, Hope at Court streets. The program, Horticulture as Gifts & Creative Packaging Using Plant Materials, will be presented by Pat Farley. Also, members are asked to bring along a box of glass ornaments or a $3 donation for the R.I. Veterans’ Home tree.

EAST PROVIDENCE

Book Club: Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., will offer its Bookies Book Club for children in grades one, two and three, Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This month’s program will be “America the Beautiful” and participants will hum along with the song “This Land is Your Land,” while making America the Beautiful travel. LITTLE COMPTON

Lawyer to speak: Attorney Stephen H. Oleskey, who represents detainees imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, will speak at the United Congregational Church, the Commons, Sunday at 4 p.m. Oleskey, a summer resident of Little Compton, is the lead counsel in Boumediene et al v. Bush et al., the Guantanamo habeas litigation.

The public is invited.

NEWPORT

Gallery Night: Many galleries in Newport will be open Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. as part of Newport Gallery Night.

Create a cake pastry party: Newport Library’s Children’s Department will host a Thanksgiving “Create a Cake” pastry party Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the lower level program room, Spring Street. The program, which is free and open to children 4 to 10, will be presented by the Pastry Gourmet Bakery. A professional baker will offer a cake decorating demonstration and then each child will frost and decorate their own 7-inch cake that they will take home. Registration required. Photo exhibit opens: As a flight surgeon armed with a stethoscope and a $5 camera, Dr. Michael DiMaio shot thousands of snapshots during his tour of duty in Europe between 1942 and 1945. A collection of those images will be featured in an exhibit, “Through the Eyes of a Soldier,” which opens at University Gallery at Salve Regina University, tomorrow, with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will continue through Dec. 10 and can be seen during gallery hours, Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. The gallery is located in Mercy Hall, corner of Lawrence and Leroy avenues. Quilt show: A colorful log cabin quilt with “twinkling” corner blocks created by members of Quilters by the Sea is this year’s prize in the group’s annual drawing. The winner will be drawn Jan. 4.
