Knitting for all ages: The Jamestown Philomenian Library, North Road, offers a free Sunday Knitting Circle from 1 to 3 p.m. for all ages and levels of expertise. Daughters to meet: “The Birthplace of the American Navy” will be the topic at Monday’s meeting of the Bristol chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Bristol Veterans Home, Metacom Avenue, Bristol, and the guest speaker will be Bruce MacGunnigle, a colonel in the Rhode Island Militia and a captain in Rhode Island’s Navy Militia. Book discussion: The Jamestown Library’s evening book discussion group will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a discussion of The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month and all are welcome to participate. Books chosen for discussion in the upcoming months are: Dec. 19, Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe; Jan. 16, Tales of Burning Love, by Louise Erdrich; Feb. 20, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, by Milan Kundera; March 20, All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy; Apr. 17, Accordion Crimes, by E. BARRINGTON

Trips to New York City: Registrations for the Barrington Community School’s holiday trips are currently being accepted. The annual trip to the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall is set for Dec. 3 and there is limited ticket availability. Before the show, there will be free time to shop; after the show, participants may have dinner independently or with the group in New York before departure for home. The trip fee of $150 ($5 senior citizen/student reduction) includes show ticket, motor coach, BCS escort and driver tip. The optional four-course dinner, with choice of entrée, is an additional $35; a children’s menu is available for $25.

Holiday Magic in New York, scheduled for Dec. 9, has limited availability as well. This trip is for those who wish to shop, sightsee, or select their own Broadway entertainment or museum exhibits. The fee of $48 adults, with a $3 reduction for senior citizens and students under 18, includes motor coach transportation, fuel surcharge, and driver tip, maps and information, and BCS escort.

Child-care program hours extended: The Bayside Family YMCA, 70 West St., will extend hours for its Prime Time program beginning Nov. 6. Prime Time cares for children six weeks and older while family members use the Y. This service is free and available to those with family memberships. Prime Time hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Prime Time is closed on Sundays.

BRISTOL

Exhibit to open: Gallery 297, on the second floor of the Green River Silver Co., at 297 Hope St., will open its holiday small picture show tonight with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome.

Garden Club to meet: The Bayberry Garden Club will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Bristol Highlands Community Center. This month members will make holiday table centerpieces. The club will provide greens and containers; members are asked to bring clippers, taper candles, holiday accents and ribbons. Also, members are reminded to bring a nonperishable food item for the Food Pantry.

Food Drive: Mt. Hope High School and Barrington High Interact Clubs will sponsor a food drive to benefit the Rhode Island Food Bank. Those who bring a canned good or nonperishable item to the Thanksgiving Day football game will receive a dollar off the regular $3 admission fee.

EAST PROVIDENCE

Women’s club to meet: The General Federation of Women’s Club’s Rumford chapter will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the library of the Francis School, Bourne Avenue. Members and guests are asked to bring nonperishable food items or supermarket gift certificates for Thanksgiving baskets that will be donated to the East Providence Welfare Department. The program will feature holiday table designs, a queen of hearts drawing and refreshments.

Teen Anime Group: Riverside Library, 475 Bullocks Point Ave., offers a Teen Anime Group for teens in grades 6 to 12. The group, which meets one Monday a month from 3 to 5 p.m., watches and discusses anime favorites while munching on Japanese snacks. The next meeting, Monday, will include the film Princess Mononoke; and the Dec. 18 meeting will be the group’s choice.

Since most anime are rated PG-13, new group members must present signed parental permission slips. Permission slips can be picked up at any East Providence Public Library location. Teen Advisory Council: Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., has formed a Teen Advisory Council which meets one Tuesday a month from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Teens write, edit, and publish the library’s teen zine called Freedom of Speech; recommend which books, CDs, DVDs, etc. the library should buy for teens; brainstorm and plan teen library programs; eat snacks, make new friends; and get volunteer service credit.

Reading volunteers needed: Weaver Memorial Library, 41 Grove Ave., is in need of readers for its Reading Buddy Program, which matches teenage and adult volunteers with younger students to read together at the library for one hour each week. Anyone age 13 or older who would like to volunteer an hour of their time each week is asked to stop by the library and fill out an application. Likewise, students in middle or elementary school who would like extra help with reading may fill out an application.

Reading Buddies meet Tuesdays between 3 and 8 p.m., Wednesdays between 3 and 8 p.m. or Saturdays between 9 a.m. and noon.

LITTLE COMPTON

Art classes: The Newport Art Museum is offering art classes at the Little Compton Community Center. The classes are funded by the Rhode Island Foundation’s Newport County Fund and all supplies and equipment are provided. There is a $25 registration fee that can be waived upon request. NEWPORT

Theater performance: The holiday show at Firehouse Theater opens tonight at 8 with My Three Angels, a high-spirited, clever parable of divine redemption and ultimate retribution, directed by Tom Erb. Performances are Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through Dec. 23. All seats are $20. Reservations are requested. Call (401)-849-3473 for reservations.

Holiday sale: The Newport Art Museum’s Coleman Center for Creative Studies will hold a faculty holiday sale tonight from 5 to 7:30 and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gilbert S. Kahn Building, 26 Liberty St., behind the museum. The sale will showcase ceramics, paintings, multimedia holiday pieces, calligraphy items, jewelry, small oil landscapes and watercolor pieces and calendars and cards.

The Griffon Shop will also hold a sale during the same times in the Griswold House. There will be consigned merchandise: china, glassware, silver, crystal and jewelry.

Task Force to meet: The Newport Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force will meet Monday at 12:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Newport Police Department, Broadway. All are welcome. For information, call (401) 849-3915.

Benefit tile for Land Trust: Pottery artisans Roseberry-Winn, of Tiverton Four Corners, recently introduced a commemorative tile with an oak and holly motif to benefit Tiverton Land Trust.
