•The Newport Officers’ Spouses’ Club held its annual scholarship reception June 8. This year, $11,000 in scholarships was awarded to nine local graduating seniors who are military dependents, with amounts ranging from $500 to $2,500. An additional $2,400 in scholarships were awarded among the recipients in partnership with the Naval Command College.
This year’s recipients are: Kevin Valente, $2,500, Middletown High School; Erin Larcom, $2,000, Middletown High School; Kelly Wooley, $2,000, North Kingstown High School; Matthew Holfinger, $1,000, Clinton High School; Steven Gates, $1,000, Rogers High School; Megan Bolan, $1,000, Prout Memorial High School; Sarah Medley, $1,000, Portsmouth High School; Christina Boston, $500, Prout Memorial High School.
This year’s Naval Command College Scholarship 2008 recipient’s are Kevin Valente, $700, Middletown High School; Kelly Wooley, $700, North Kingstown High School; Christina Boston, $500, Prout Memorial High School; and Robert Moore, $500, Rogers High School.
•The 2008 Southcoast Hospitals Employee Recognition Ceremony was held May 30 at the Venus De Milo in Swansea to honor employees who have reached milestone years of service at Southcoast Hospitals Group’s Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

•The Newport County Board of Realtors recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to two college-bound area students. This year’s recipients are Ashley Edes of Middletown High School, and Russell Helger Jr. of Tiverton High School.
Ashley, who aspires to be a middle-school mathematics teacher, will attend Rhode Island College. Russell, who plans to be an engineer, will attend the University of Rhode Island.
•The Bristol chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently honored Greg Amore of East Providence and Davison Bolster of Warren. Amore, a history teacher at East Providence High School, was presented with the chapter’s American History Teacher of the Year Award. Bolster received the Bristol Chapter Community Service Award for preservation of the waterfront in Warren.
•At the Bristol County Lions Club’s recent annual meeting, new officers were installed. The new slate includes Linda Pelland, president; Wendy Allen, first vice president; Tom Carroll, second vice president; Frank Cirillo, secretary; Joseph Farmer, treasurer; Margaret Lunney, lion tamer; Debra Krohn, tail twister and Marie Byrnes, membership chair. The directors for the year are Joseph Karouz, Joseph Pelland, Bette Walpole and Wendy Allen.
Also, special awards were given out, including a “Lion of the Year Award” to Joseph Farmer for his fundraising dedication and a special President’s Appreciation Award to Carmen DiQuinzio for 55 years of active service in the Bristol County Lions Club.
•The Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties recently recognized 117 volunteers who provided more than 3,900 hours during 2007. Of special note were the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, which honor volunteers who have given 100 hours or more, and Longevity Awards, which honor volunteers who have served for one year or more.

•The Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties dedicated its 58th-annual meeting to the memory of Dr. Donald P. Dressler and Ellen Murphy. Dressler served on the agency’s board of directors from May 2006 until his death in 2007. Murphy was a member of the board of directors from 1987 to 1991 and on the Advisory Board for the Young Parents program from 1985 to 1990.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Mary Dwyer Award for service to the agency. Mary Clark of Newport received the award this year. She is the longest-serving hospice volunteer at the agency (13 years). Jean Anderson, executive director and CEO, also presented special awards honoring commitment to the agency and community to Mary Buckwalter, a teacher in the Youth Success GED/Career Academy; Marge Perry, social work supervisor and the social work team; Pat Kalble and Sue Garvey, counselors in the Youth Success Program; Regina Kelly, CNA; and Gloria Collier, who retired after 16 years as intake data entry specialist.
•Louis A Rego was recently inducted as the new president of the Warren-Barrington Rotary. Rego was one of 65 club presidents in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts installed by Rotary International President D.K. Lee of Seoul, South Korea.
The group installation was held at the Rhode Island Convention Center on June 23 before a gathering of Rotary members and friends from around the world.
