Friends of the Poor walk: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will hold its first nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk this year. Locally, a walk will be held Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. from Bristol Community College, Elsbree Street. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Pledges made on behalf of registered walkers in Fall River will benefit those in need in Fall River.

Book sale: The Friends of the Fall River Public Library will open its four-day book sale today from 3 to 7 p.m. (for members only) in the meeting room of the main library, 104 N. Main St. Anyone wishing to become a member can do so by paying the $10 annual dues at the door. The sale continues tomorrow from noon to 7 p.m., Friday from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
People looking for especially good deals should be sure to come on Saturday when they can take away a full bag of books (in a bag supplied by the Friends) for only $3.

Seekonk
Horse lovers club: The Newman YMCA, 472 Taunton Ave., will offer a Horse Lovers Club in collaboration with 4H beginning tomorrow and running through the end of the school year. The club is for middle schoolage young people and will meet Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. Participants will learn all aspects of equine care and management as well as have the opportunity to join the Mestengo 4H Club. Pumpkin Somethin’ festival: The Aitken School, Newman Avenue, will hold its fall festival, Pumpkin Somethin’, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the school’s PTO, the event will include a variety of children’s games with prizes, crafts for children, music, food, a rock wall and a moon bounce. There will also be a bake table, a raffle and pumpkins and mums will be for sale. The event will be held rain or shine. All proceeds go to the Aitken PTO Fund for educational and social events throughout the school year.
Touch-A-Truck: The March of Dimes Rhode Island Chapter will hold its first Touch-A-Truck fundraiser Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seekonk Speedway, 1710 Fall River Ave. (Route 6).
Children and families can climb on and play in as many as 20 vehicles. In addition, there will also be a classic car and motorcycle show nearby at the same time. A $20 registration fee is required to enter a vehicle into the classic show.

Swansea
Baseball tryouts: The Swansea Independent Baseball League will hold tryouts for its two 11-and-Under Division AAU Baseball teams Sunday and Oct. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ashton Field (while renovations are being made to SIBL fields at the Nike Site Playing Complex in Swansea). Players born on or between May 1, 1997, and April 30, 1998, will be eligible to compete. Residents of any community are eligible to attend the tryouts since the SIBL has no boundary restrictions for players. However, all players involved in the SIBL’s AAU baseball program must also register for and play in its regular-season program in 2009.

Autumn Fair: The First Christian Congregational Church, “Olde White Church”, Route 6 at Maple Avenue, will hold its annual Autumn Fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured will be handmade gifts and crafts including one-of-a-kind bird houses, baked treats, fudge and candy and bargains and treasures at the White Elephant table. The Country Store will offer homemade jams and jellies, apples and cider, cheese, ham and beans and other foods. Chowder and clam cakes, grinders, chili, apple crisp and more will be offered at the “Autumn Fair Café”.
A silent auction will feature unique gift items, and children are sure to enjoy the giant bouncy, face painting, and Make-Your-Own-Sundae booths. The Christmas table will offer special gifts and the new Picture This table will offer frames for every occasion.
A live concert, courtesy of the Hillside Galileans Gospel Group, will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Craft tables are also available for any crafter or artist who would like to display their wares. Rent is $25 with table and two chairs included. For information or to reserve a table, call the church office, 673-7179.
