Rehearsals begin: The Jamestown Community Chorus will begin weekly rehearsals for its holiday concerts Monday at 7 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. Walking program kickoff: AARP Rhode Island will kick off its 10-week walking program Sept. 16 in Colt State Park, Hope Street (Route 114), Bristol. Registration and health screening will begin at noon, with lunch at 12:45 p.m., featuring a raffle for six pairs of sneakers. The walk will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and participants will receive free T-shirts and pedometers. From 2 to 3 p.m. there will be music and dancing. Class reunion: The Class of 1952 of St. Mary Academy-Bay View will celebrate its 55th year reunion Sunday. The event will begin with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. at the Bay View chapel, 3040 Pawtucket Ave., Riverside, followed by a luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Tyler Point Grille, 32 Barton Ave., Barrington. Girls fast-pitch softball league: East Bay Fast Pitch, a nonprofit youth league from Bristol, will hold open tryouts for its 16-and-under travel team Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bristol Town Beach Sports Complex, Colt State Park, Hope Street (Route 114), Bristol. Barrington

Fall programs for children: The Barrington Library will begin registration for its Mother Goose Time lap-sit program Monday. This is a program designed for very young children (newborns to 23 months) and their caregiver. The group will meet Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and Fridays at 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. Patrons are limited to one class per week. Classes begin the week of Sept. 24.

Registration for Booklook begins Tuesday . For children age 2 accompanied by an adult, the 30-minute class will include stories, songs and finger plays appropriate for an early introduction to a structured library experience. The class is limited to 12 children. No younger siblings can be accommodated. Classes are held Mondays at 11 a.m., Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Classes begin the week of Sept. 24.

Storytimes resume the week of Sept. 24 with multiage storytimes, for children under age 6 and their caregiver, and storytime for ages 3 to 5, designed as a first independent experience and children attend without their caregivers. Multiage storytimes, which meet Mondays at 10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m., include finger rhymes, songs and films. Storytime for ages 3 to 5 meets Thursdays at 10 a.m. Registration is not required for either storytime group.

Bristol

Sodality to meet: The Holy Rosary Sodality of St. Elizabeth Church will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the parish auditorium, Wood Street. Members will welcome their new associate pastor and speaker for the evening, the Rev. Victor T. Silva. Also, the committee for the Oct. 27 annual bazaar will be announced. All new and past members are invited. Refreshments will follow the meeting.

Lecture series: The Herreshoff Marine Museum is presenting a series of lectures celebrating the America’s Cup. Tuesday at 7 p.m., naval architect David Pedrick, designer in eight America’s Cup campaigns, will discuss the “Twelve Meter Years: 1958-1987.” His talk will be held in the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s Hall of Boats, One Burnside Street, with a reception to follow. Admission will be $5 per person, or free for museum members.

The final lecture in the series will be held Oct.18, when author John Rousmaniere will speak on “Always New: How the America’s Cup Never Stops Reinventing Itself (And Why We Should Approve).”

Little Compton

Martial arts for children: The Little Compton Community Center will offer tae kwon do/aikido classes for ages 5 and up on Mondays, Sept. 17 to Dec. 17 from 3 to 4:15 p.m. The martial arts class will be led by Mardo Muralles, and the cost is $168 for the 12-week session. A minimum of eight students is needed. Registration is required by calling 635-2400.

Middletown

Kickball and ultimate Frisbee players wanted: The Middletown Recreation Department is looking for coed kickball teams and individual players, as well as adult co-ed ultimate Frisbee teams and individual players for leagues this fall. Leagues meet for six weeks starting Sept. 17 at Pottsey Field on the West Main Road complex. The league fee is $90 per team, with a minimum of 12 members age 18 and older or $10 for an individual. Stone wall workshop: The Newport Restoration Foundation will offer a stone wall workshop Sept. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Prescott Farm, 2009 West Main Rd. Participants will be taught to build and repair traditional stonewalls in this hands-on experience. Newport

Senior project meeting: Rogers High School will hold a mandatory senior project kickoff meeting Sept. 13 for students and their parents/guardians. Parents and students have an opportunity to attend this meeting at either 7 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The Class of 2008 is the first class to earn a high school diploma under the new Rhode Island diploma system. Counselors and English teachers will be available to explain this program and answer any questions or concerns. Students will also receive their senior project handbooks which will outline the expectations and timeline for this year-long project.

Benefit fishing tournament: The Hannah Grace Spearfishing Tournament will be held Sept. 15 at King’s Beach, Ocean Drive (past Brenton Point State Park). The event is being held in memory of Hannah Grace Gassaway, who was born with Turner Syndrome and funds raised will benefit the children of the Magic Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to individuals suffering from growth disorders.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three fish in two categories — striped bass and tautog. A list of prizes, which will be provided by Apnea-USA, and official rules of the event can be found at www.NewportFreediveCo.com.

Those planning to participate can register in advance and dive anywhere beginning at sunrise. The weigh-in, raffle and refreshments will be at 4 p.m. at King’s Beach.

The cost to register is $20, which includes one free raffle ticket. Those who register in advance, receive two free raffle tickets. Registration on the day of the event will be from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at King’s Beach. Additional raffle tickets will be available for an added cost of $5 for three tickets or $10 for seven tickets.

Tree talk: The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a talk on “The Great Victorian Trees of Chateau-sur-Mer,” Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Chateau-sur-Mer, 474 Bellevue Ave. Participants will walk the grounds and learn about the species of trees and their care with Preservation Society gardens and grounds director Jeff Curtis, horticulturist Jim Donahue and Chris Fletcher of Bartlett Tree Experts. Portsmouth

Benefit sail: The Portsmouth Free Public Library Association will host a benefit two-hour sunset sail of Newport Harbor aboard the wooden schooner Aurora Sept. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person which includes a box lunch, wine, beer and soft drinks. The schooner can accommodate 45 passengers, so advance purchase is recommended before reservations are filled. Tickets can be purchased at the library, 2658 East Main Rd.

An Evening of Youthful Praise: The Portsmouth United Methodist Church will sponsor “An Evening of Youthful Praise” Saturday at 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary, 2732 East Main Rd. This event will feature several praise, worship and liturgical dance teams. The performance will be held in place of the church’s Saturday Night Live Service. There is no fee to attend, but a free-will offering will be accepted during the event. For information, call the church office, 683-4005.

Get Fit classes: The Newport County YMCA will offer off-site classes at Common Fence Point Community Hall, on Anthony Road, beginning the week of Sept. 17. “Get Fit” classes will include Pilates/flexibility, Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. Cardio/sculp will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. Registration will be held Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Classes run 13 weeks through Dec. 19, with no classes Nov. 19 and 21. To attend both classes each week for the full session, the cost is $156 or, to attend one class per week for the full session, the cost is $78. Tiverton

Basketball signups: Registration for the 2007-08 Junior Basketball league will be held tomorrowfrom 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Judson Street Community Center.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Those registering for the first time must provide proof of age. A registration fee of $65 per child or $90 per family is required. In any case where hardship exists, help is available by contacting Joe Perry, 624-3370. These requests will be held in strict confidence. Players in all divisions must be residents of Tiverton or Little Compton or full-time students in the Tiverton or Little Compton school systems.

The Instructional Division is for boys and girls who are first time players and who will be age 7 or 8 as of Dec. 31. The Girls Divisions include Junior Division for girls 9, 10 and 11, as of Dec. 31, and the senior division for girls 12 and 13 and girls age 14 as of Dec. 31 and in the eighth grade. The Co-Ed Division has three divisions for children who will be at least 9-years-old, but not more than 13-years-old as of Dec. 31. Eight-year-olds that have completed the instructional program will participate with the 9-year-olds. The high school division, for boys who do not participate in varsity or junior varsity sports from December through March.

Information concerning league operations and important dates will be made available to all parents in attendance upon completion of the registration process. For those who took advantage of early registration, this information will be available shortly after Sept. 9.

Open house: Tiverton High School, 100 North Brayton Rd., will hold an open house Sept. 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The evening will provide parents/guardians the opportunity to briefly visit each child’s teachers and receive information on curriculum, instructional and grading policies. The meeting will begin in the auditorium. Additionally, parents/guardians of senior students are invited to attend a meeting at 6 in the library. This meeting will cover the graduation policy for the class of 2008 and an overview of the senior project process.

Warren

Fall acting classes: Actorsworkshop, the studio arm of 2nd Story Theatre, will offer two fall classes. Scene study and a physical acting class, will be held Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 22 to Nov. 3 at the theater at 28 Market St. Tuition is $200 and the class is open to ages 16 and up.
