Wildflower gardening presentation: The Friends of the Jamestown Library will host a program of the Rhode Island Wild Plant Society, Gardening with Wildflowers, tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the library meeting hall. Barrington

Drama Festival: Barrington Community Theatre, a part of the town’s recreation department, will sponsor the third-annual Barrington Drama Festival on Saturday at the Barrington High School auditorium, Lincoln Avenue. The festival will include eight student-directed plays featuring more than 50 Barrington students ages 7 to 18.

The schedule is as follows: noon, The Bible in Thirty Minutes or Less, directed by senior Rich Spoehr; 12:45 p.m., P is for Perfect, directed by senior Kelly Quinlin; 1:30 p.m., Rapunzel Uncut, directed by senior Devin Schiff; 2:15 p.m.; The Katrina Project, directed by sophomore Seth Chitwood; 3:15 p.m., The Return of the King, directed by senior Seb Bezzera; 6 p.m., Death Comes to Us All, Mary Agnes, directed by senior Henry Brinkerhoff; 7 p.m., Clara, directed by senior Tad Bezzera; and 8 p.m., Brighton Beach Memoirs, directed by Tom Bentley. Following the performances will be the awards ceremony.

Rabies clinic: The town will hold a rabies clinic Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Public Works garage, Upland Way. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. Two-year vaccines will be given to the pets of owners who provide written proof of previous rabies vaccination.

Dogs and cats may be licensed at the clinic, or by mail by sending the renewal fee along with a current rabies vaccination certificate to Town Clerk, 283 County Rd., Barrington, R.I. In accordance with town ordinance, dogs and cats must be licensed by April 30 to avoid late fees.

The rabies vaccine fee is $10, which must be paid in cash (no checks or credit cards). The dog/cat license fee is $5, or $3 if the animal is spayed or neutered. This can be paid in cash or by check payable to Town of Barrington.

Residents who no longer have their pet are asked to notify the Town Clerk’s office, 247-1900, ext. 4.

Bristol

Civil-rights talk: Author Nikki Giovanni, renowned human-rights activist and poet, will speak on civil rights tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Roger Williams University’s Campus Rec. Center Gym, Old Ferry Road. Her lecture, titled “Civil Rights in the 21st Century,” is free and open to the public as space allows.

Artist talk: Paulette H. Carr will discuss her exhibit “Time Passage: Seven Years of Art,” on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Linden Place Ballroom, 500 Hope St. The exhibit, which is on display at the Bristol Art Museum, located at Linden Place, features sculpture and paintings from 2000 to 2007. It will remain on display through April 1. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Indoor cemetery tour: Local historian professor Paul Fletcher and son, Christopher, arborist and cemetery historian, will conduct a slide tour of Rhode Island’s first garden cemetery, historic Juniper Hill, Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Bristol Statehouse, High Street on the Town Common. Their presentation will include lively stories about the great folks who lie there — and the exotic flora imported by Mary Codman and Bristol sea captains. The pair promise there will be ghost appearances of several of the personages who lie at Juniper Hill Cemetery: The roles in fact will be portrayed mischievously by prominent Bristolian mystery guests.

Volunteer open house: Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame will hold a volunteer open house and reception Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Volunteers will have the chance to experience the museum’s bustling waterfront, explore American ingenuity and discover broken boundaries. Tailor-made volunteer opportunities from waterfront hand to interactive interpreter are available. Training in a variety of areas will be provided at a later date. Gifted education meeting: The March statewide meeting of Rhode Island Advocates for Gifted Education will be held tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave. The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.riage.org.

Chowder and clamcakes: The Riverside Congregational Church, 15 Oak Ave., will be accepting takeout orders of chowder (red, white and clear), clam cakes and stuffies each Friday through March 30. School musical: The McMahon Middle School Chorus will present an original musical, Cover Story, by music teacher B. J. Whitehouse, tomorrow and Friday at 7 p.m. in the school’s commons. The show features the collaborative talents of the middle school students.

Newport

Concert: The Newport Baroque Orchestra will present A Dublin Concert Friday at 8 p.m. at Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St. The orchestra, under the direction of Paul Cienniwa, performs music heard in 18th-century Dublin on period instruments with guest artist Barbara Poeschl-Edrich playing baroque and Celtic harps and featuring works by Handel, Geminiani, O’Carolan, Kusser and Arne.

Theater performance: The play, Chemo Brain!, written by Linda Phelan Schroeder, will be presented Sunday at 4 p.m. at Jane Pickens Theater, Touro Street on Washington Square. The play is about a support group for women who have experienced recurrent cancer. The Tuesday Group meets to vent, cope, hang onto each other and mostly laugh. Not a play about cancer and dying, it is about the power of hope, friendship and living fiercely. Church benefit: A fundraiser screening of Hurricane on the Bayou to benefit Emmanuel Episcopal Church, will be held Sunday at 10:45 a.m. at the Feinstein IMAX Theatre at the Providence Place Mall. Proceeds from the screening will benefit Emmanuel’s upcoming mission trip to New Orleans. Ten adults and six teenagers have volunteered to go to New Orleans on April 14 to 21 to work for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana supporting their continuing post-Katrina cleanup efforts.

Film screening and discussion: A public screening of Darfur Diaries and a discussion with Jennifer Marlowe, one of the film’s directors, will be presented Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Jane Pickens Theater. The film documents the ongoing human crisis in Western Sudan, the effects of genocide in today’s world, and the responsibility to support collective human rights.

Along with the Newport International Film Festival, the screening is being presented by Salve Regina University’s Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy through its Ideas into Action program.

Portsmouth

Expressive arts program: Learn simple and fun tools for dealing with winter-time (or any time) blues with Straight to the Heart expressive arts educational facilitators Karen Johnson and Sara Leary, tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Portsmouth Free Public, 2658 East Main Rd. Using expressive arts incorporating writing, art, movement and sound as shown in this presentation will help deal with the very real and common problem of the blues.

This program is free and open to the public and is suitable for all ages. Seating is limited so call the library at 683-9457 or stop by to register for the program.

Tiverton

Concert: The Four Corners Arts Center will hold a special concert Sunday at 3 p.m. at The Meeting House, Main Road at Tiverton Four Corners. Featured will be pianist, Michael Bahmann and violinist, Nell Flanders, who will present a program including three Mozart Sonatas and a Rondo in A Minor.

Bahmann is the artistic director of Musica Maris, a concert series dedicated to performing music from the 17th to the 19th centuries on period instruments. Baroque violinist, Flanders, performs regularly with Musica Maris.

Thrift-shop sale: Trinity Trader Thrift Shop, 1956 Main Rd., will offer all merchandise at 50 cents per item until Saturday. All proceeds benefit Holy Trinity Church. Shop hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Saturday.

Warren

Pasta and meatball dinner: The Baptist Church of Warren, 407 Main St., will hold a pasta-and-meatball dinner Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This all-you-can-eat meal will also include salad, bread, dessert and beverages. Takeout will also be available. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 12 and younger, and free for children under age 3.
