Holistic presentation: The Friends of Jamestown Library will present “A Holistic Approach to Diabetes Prevention,” today at 1 p.m. at the Jamestown Philomenian Library, North Road. The program is free to all. Refreshments will be served. For information, call 423-7280.

Lecture series The Audubon Society of Rhode Island will offer lectures on topics ranging from bioterrorism to horseshow crabs to female pirates this month and next. The popular series is held at the Society’s Environmental Education Center, Hope Street (Route 114) at the Bristol/Warren town line.

The series kicks off tomorrow at 7 p.m. with “New England’s Unique Marine Wildlife,” by Carol (Krill) Carson, president, New England Wildlife Alliance and an educator for Captain John Boats. Among the variety of marine life that calls New England its home, are the humpback whale, the Kemp Ridley’s sea turtle, the gray seal, the northern gannet and the basking shark. Participants will learn how they can help protect marine wildlife by becoming a coastal wildlife observer. Lectures continue April 12, at 7 p.m., with “Crab Wars: A Tale of Horseshoe Crabs, Bioterrorism and Human Health,” by William Sargent, NOVA consultant and winner of the Lawrence L. Winship award for best book of the year; April 26, 7 p.m., “Pirates! Woman and the Sea,” by James L. Nelson, a former professional sailor and award-winning author of sea stories;

The fee per lecture is $10 for Audubon Society of Rhode Island members, $12 for nonmembers. For all four lectures the discounted fee is $35 for members, $40 for nonmembers. Registration is required as space is limited.

BARRINGTON

Forum on Iraq: A group of experts will speak about the situation in Iraq Sunday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the Barrington Congregational Church, County Road. Participants include Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse; Donald Daniel, professor in the security studies program at Georgetown University; Michael G. Jackson, professor at Brown University and Stonehill College, and Sean Gilfillan, Army officer who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The event, which is hosted by East Bay Citizens for Democracy, is free to all.

Reading series: The Reading Across Rhode Island title for 2007 is Ron McLarty’s novel The Memory of Running. Two minicourses centered on the novel will be offered this spring at the Barrington Public Library. Led by librarians Deborah Barchi and Lauri Burke, both series begin with a discussion of The Memory of Running, continue with a showing of the documentary Ron McLarty: A Homecoming, and conclude with a discussion of Travels with Charlie in Search of America, an “on the road” memoir by John Steinbeck.Participants are invited to choose the series that best fits their schedule; the second is a repeat of the first.

The morning series will meet at 10 a.m. Friday and continue March 23 and 30, also at 10 a.m. Registration is under way. The evening series will run Wednesdays at 7 p.m., April 11, 18 and 25. Registration for this series begins March 22.

BRISTOL

Benefit performance: Joanna Featherstone, actress, storyteller, teacher and poet, will perform “Poetic Visions,” Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church, Hope at Church Street. A reception to meet Featherstone will follow the performance. Admission will be by donation at the door to help St. Michael’s meet its goal for the Bromley Mission in Monrovia, Liberia. EAST PROVIDENCE

Fish-and-chips dinners: St. Martha’s Church, 2595 Pawtucket Ave., is hosting a fish and chips dinner every Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. during Lent (except Good Friday). Diners can eat in the church hall or dinners can be purchased for take-out. For more information, call the rectory, 434-4060.

Lenten services: Riverside Congregational Church will hold weekly Taize meditation services Wednesdays at 7 p.m. during the season of Lent. The Taize style service was developed by the Taize Monastic Community in the Burgundy region of France. This Protestant monastic community ecumenically welcomes all Christians to common prayer and to the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. All are welcome. Game nights: The Department of Parks & Recreation will host two game nights for city residents this month . Game night for adults, ages 18 and older, will be held tomorrow and family game night, for adults and children will be held March 22. Both events will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 100 Bullocks Point Ave., and feature a variety of board and card games and free refreshments. MIDDLETOWN

Public meeting: The Island Watch-Dogs Association will hold an open neighborhood public meeting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 9 Commerce Drive. The meeting will include discussion on a new town charter, taxes, public spending, public policy, eminent domain and any other concerns participants may have. All are welcome.

NEWPORT

Lunchtime Lenten recital: Tina Letcher and Erika Poggie will present a lunchtime Lenten recital tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. at Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square. The two are members of the recorder quintet, Phoebe’s Echo. Donations will be accepted at the door to benefit Music at Trinity. All are welcome.

Annual drawing: The Island Moving Co. is selling tickets for its annual raffle of a trip for two to Paris. The raffle is limited to 1,500 tickets, at$10 apiece. Tickets are available from Island Moving Co. board members and volunteers.The drawing will be held April 4 at 7 p.m. at Tucker’s Bistro, 150 Broadway . The winner need not be present to win. Tickets will be available for sale just before the drawing.

Family Concert: Billy Jonas will give a performance to benefit the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation and the List Academy of Music & Arts March 25 at 12:30 p.m. at the Jane Pickens Theater, Washington Square.

Jonas performs on weird, homemade instruments, doing original songs and stories with the audience, especially children, invited to play along.

Those planning to attend should order tickets early. Tickets are $25 for orchestra seating, $10 for adult general admission and $5 for children age 12 and under, general admission. Seating for orchestra ticket holders opens at noon, with the opportunity to meet Jonas before the show. General admission seating opens at 12:20 p.m. with the concert beginning at 12:30.

Girls basketball signups: The Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the 2007 girls spring basketball league, scheduled to begin play early next month.

Any girl now in grades 8 to 11 is eligible to play. Girls may register as a team, a group or individually. Games will be played on Sunday evenings and there will be no practices, so that there are no conflicts with spring sports. All games will be at the Martin Recreation Center in Newport.

PORTSMOUTH

St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance: The Portsmouth Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Rd., will hold a St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance Saturday. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. with music by The Silvertones from 7 to 10:30. Tickets are $13 each and the menu includes a corned beef and cabbage dinner. Tickets are nonrefundable and must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.

TIVERTON

Osprey presentation: Lori Gibson, supervising wildlife biologist for the state Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Fish & Wildlife, will present a program on the osprey in Rhode Island tonight at 6:30 at the George Hail Library, 530 Main St.

Benefit St. Patrick’s Day dinner: The American Legion Auxiliary, Warren Unit 11, will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Metacom Avenue. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any auxiliary member or by calling 245-5431 and leaving a message. Children’s tickets are also available. The dinner is the auxiliary’s primary fundraiser of the year. Part of the proceeds will be used to send packages to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
