Grants available: Grant applications are now available for Aquidneck Island organizations and neighborhood groups working to preserve small open spaces or improve a neighborhood park. Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) recently distributed applications to 75 local organizations. The ALT Merritt Neighborhood Fund provides grants ranging from $100 to $2,500. Grant applications may be obtained by calling 849-2799. The deadline for proposals, originally June 15, has been extended to June 25.

Robotics Classes: The Engineers of Tomorrow, Rhode Island’s championship FIRST LEGO LEAGUE team, has announced the organization of summer robotics classes for ages 6 and up. Classes include “Join the Robotic Circus!” ages 6 to 12, June 20-22, $125, 9 a.m. to noon, Barrington Congregational Church, Route 114, Barrington; Mission to Mars, ages 10 to 13, June 25-27, $125, 9 a.m. to noon, Barrington Congregational Church; Electrical “C” for ages 12 plus, July 9-13, $250 plus $60 materials fee, 8;30 to 11:30 a.m., R. I. Fencing Academy, 36 Cutler St., Warren, and Advanced FLL Camp, ages 10 to 14, Aug. 6-8, $125, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Roger Williams University.

Bristol

Center meeting: The Benjamin Church Senior Center will hold its next meeting and election of officers today at 1:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Elizabeth Melanson from Odyssey Health Care, who will speak on “Know Your Medicare Benefit: The Myths and Realities of Hospice.”

Garden Club to meet: Today’s meeting of the Bristol Garden Club will be held at 1 p.m. St. Michael’s Church Parish House, Hope and Church Streets. The speaker will be Kevin O’Malley, former director of state parks in the East Bay and Newport (including Colt State Park in Bristol and Fort Adams in Newport ). He will speak on the Rhode Island park system and in particular on little-known areas and parks.

Members will also exchange perennial plants. Guests and prospective members are welcome to all meetings.

Walking tours: The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society will offer its next walking tour tomorrow. This tour will focus on Byfield Street and will begin at 3 p.m. from the society’s headquarters, 48 Court St., and be led by Ray Batther.

On Saturday, the walking tour will be “Tree Treasures of Wood Street.” This tour will start at 10 a.m. at the gazebo on the Town Common and will be led by Ray Payson of the Bristol Tree Society.

The price for all walking tours is $5 and free to members. Memberships are available at the tours. For more information call the society at 253-7223.

College admissions prep course: Roger Williams University will host Junior Jumpstart, a free daylong program featuring seminars on everything from application forms to personal essays to financial aid, Friday and again June 20, both from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The program, open to all high school students and their parents will begin in the university’s New Academic Building, on the Bristol campus at One Old Ferry Road. Then, parents and students will separate for seminars hosted by Roger Williams admissions counselors, residence life coordinators and financial aid staff. The day will conclude with lunch in the university’s Dining Commons and a campus tour.

Garden and antiques fair: Mount Hope Farm, Metacom Avenue, will hold a garden and antiques fair Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Featured will be 45 dealers from all over New England, with decorations for the country home or city garden. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will be under large tents on the grounds of the farm. Daily admission will be $10 each

A preview party will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., featuring “first pick” of all the antiques on display. Tickets are $75 each and all proceeds will benefit Mount Hope Farm. For information, call 254-1745.

East Providence

Anniversary celebration: The East Providence Community Center will host a day of fun and food on Saturday in celebration of its 35th anniversary. Included will be breakfast at 8 a.m and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be crafts available for the children, booths for adults, a yard sale and raffles. There will also be the chance to tour the center and see all the services it provides to the community.

Daughters meet: Riverside Circle 28, Daughters of Isabella, will meet tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Crescent View Avenue, Riverside. The speaker for the evening will be Kelly Wall Ratcliffe who will talk about her pilgrimages to Medugorje. Refreshments will be offered.

Flowers for graduation: The East Providence High School Parent Teacher Student Association will offer flowers for sale at the entrance to the graduation program at Pierce Field Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Little Compton

Garden tour: The Little Compton Garden Club will present a garden tour, “Stone Walls and Water Views: Gardens of Little Compton,” today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour features nine unique gardens. A variety of container gardens full of interesting flora for patios, windows and decks will be on sale at the Sakonnet Golf Club. Proceeds from the tour will be used to support Youth Internship Program at the Southside Community Land Trust in Providence, Student Conservation Association Internship Program, GCA scholarships and for civic projects in the Little Compton area.

Newport

Boat show: The Newport Spring Boat Show will open Friday and continue through Sunday at the Newport Yachting Center, Commercial Wharf at America’s Cup Avenue. Featured will be hundreds of previously owned and new clearance models of powerboats, sailboats, multihulls, kayaks, inflatables and dinghies. Seminars will be held every day on a wide variety of boating subjects.

Saturday and Sunday Sail Newport will be introducing families to the sport of sailing with a free sail around the harbor. Plus, there will be kayak and rowing shell demos. On Sunday there will be a barbecue from 3 to 5 p.m., free with the purchase of a show ticket. Also on Sunday, military personnel will pay half price for their ticket with proper identification.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, free for children age 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. On Friday, preview day, all tickets will be $15 with no discounts for children. For each ticket sold that day, $5 will be donated to the R. I. Military Family Relief Fund. Film screening: The International Yacht Restoration School will host a special screening of the History of the America’s Cup Races 1851-2007, Friday at 6:30 p.m. at O’Hare Academic Center, at Salve Regina University, Ochre Point Avenue.

Produced by world-class sailor and journalist Gary Jobson, this documentary chronicles the history of the America’s Cup in interviews with winning helmsmen and skippers such as Dennis Conner, Russell Coutts, Bill Koch, and Ted Turner; designers of winning Cup yachts such as Olin Stephens; syndicate heads Ernesto Bertarelli and Larry Ellison; and historians and journalists such as John Rousmaniere and New Zealander Peter Montgomery.

The “director’s cut” of this documentary, which includes newly discovered footage and photos, is being screened in only four venues in the world. A reception at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a 7:30 screening. Tickets are $75 per person and must be reserved in advance by calling 848-5777, ext. 217, or by e-mailing dopp@iyrs.org. Proceeds will benefit the restoration of the 1831 mill building on the IYRS campus.

Portsmouth

Book sale: The Portsmouth Free Public Library will hold its annual spring book sale Saturday. A preview party for members of the library association will be from 9 to 10 a.m., with the regular sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is now accepting donations of books for the sale.

Car wash: The Portsmouth United Methodist Church will offer a free car wash Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clements’ Market, East Main Road.

Car show: The Portsmouth Rotary Club will sponsor the first of its car shows this summer on Sunday, at the Portsmouth Abbey School, Cory’s Lane. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon and awards will be given out at 2 p.m. The registration fee is $10 per meet car.

The general public is welcome starting at 10 a.m. and the admission fee is $5 per car. The Newport Concert Band will perform at 1 p.m. and Crusin’ Bruce Palmer will spin the “oldies” and be awarding trophies.

The second Portsmouth Rotary Club-sponsored show of the season will be the Classic Car and Corral Show July 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glen Park on Glen Road, off Route 138 (East Main Rd.) Bruce Palmer will again be the announcer.

Tiverton

Spring walk: The Tiverton Garden Club will sponsor a spring walk through Pardon Gray Preserve on Saturday. The leader will be Jim Spears of the Tiverton Land Trust.
