Afternoon classes: The Bayside Family YMCA, 70 West St., offers an hour of fun and fitness Monday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons at 3 p.m. Included is an indoor cycling class Monday and Thursday and Sculptilates on Wednesday. Digital portfolio parent workshop: Mt. Hope High School will hold a parent workshop offering technical assistance and providing parents with a guide on how to help their child with their portfolio, tomorrow from 6 to 8 p.m. The workshop will provide parents with information on how to add assignments to the portfolio, help students with the reflection process, and provide parents with log-in and passwords for the portfolio system. The workshop will take place in several A-Building classrooms.
Kindergarten registration: The School Department will open registration for kindergarten next month. All kindergarten registrations must be done at the student registration center, 80 Burnside Ave., Riverside, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Only parents or legal guardians can register a child. Required documents are a birth certificate, immunization records and legal proof of East Providence residency. State law requires that children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 for kindergarten eligibility. There is a School Committee policy for early admission testing for those children who will turn 5 before Oct. 31. Information on early admission is available at the registration center or by calling (401) 433-6210. Inquiries can also be e-mailed to regisistration@epschoolsri.com. There will be two evening registration dates, Feb. 7 and 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. to accommodate parents who cannot register during the day. Story times: All branches of the East Providence Public Library will offer story times beginning this week and continuing through May 3. The Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., offers an evening family story time for ages 2 to 6, Wednesdays at 6:30. For children ages 2 and younger, Born to Read is held Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. and for ages 3 to 6, Preschool Story Time is held Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The Fuller Branch Library, 260 Dover Ave., offers Toddler Story Time Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for ages 2 and 3. The Riverside Branch Library, 475 Bullocks Point Ave., offers Toddler Story Time for ages 2 and 3, Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and Preschool Story time for ages 4 to 6, Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. The Rumford Branch Library, 1392 Pawtucket Ave., offers Preschool Story Time for ages 3 to 6, Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. No advance registration is necessary for story times, which are free. Chicken pie supper: Little Compton Grange will put on a public all-meat chicken pie supper Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at the IOOF hall. Reservations can be made by calling (401) 635-4749. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12. Take-out will be available.
Community blood drive: The Knights of Columbus will hold a community blood drive Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the lower hall at its home, 7 Valley Rd. A free steak dinner and a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee will be given to each donor. The public is encouraged to attend. Monthly networking event: The Newport County Chamber of Commerce will hold its next Business After Hours event Thursday at 5 p.m. at Newport Hospital, Powell Avenue. The meeting will include the launching of a new program, Welcome to Newport County, which will provide new Newport County homeowners with a comprehensive package of information about living and working in the region. Packages will be available at each Newport County town hall and the chamber offices and they will include information including business directories, shopping options, menus, demographics, and health and recreational opportunities Homebuyers education class: Rhode Island Housing wants to help more Rhode Island residents become homeowners. Together with BankNewport, the agency is offering a free homebuyer education class Jan. 30 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at BankNewport, 12 Turner Rd. The workshop will cover safe-lending practices, qualifying for a mortgage, correcting credit problems, saving for a down payment and more. Many graduates of the class have qualified for the agency’s FirstHomes line of low-interest, fixed-rate mortgages. The agency’s current rates range from 4.625 percent to 5.375 percent, depending on household income. To qualify for a FirstHomes loan, participants may have an income of up $81,200 for a household of one or two, or $93,300 for a household of three or more. Maximum purchase prices range from $374,000 for single-family homes and condominiums to $500,000 for four-family properties. Borrowers can choose a loan with a 30-, 35- or 40-year term. The longer the term of the loan, the lower the monthly mortgage payment will be. In addition, Rhode Island Housing offers down-payment and closing-cost assistance. Featured will be hors d’oeuvres, a performance by Off the Curb and a silent auction. Tickets are $20 each and those attending must be at least 18 years old. The event will feature Dan Ferreira’s Meadowlarks Orchestra, as well as a swing dance lesson, a ballroom dance exhibition and a Lindy hop demonstration. Tax filing assistance: The East Bay Community Action Program, in conjunction with the statewide EITC coalition, will provide free tax filing for individuals and families making under $38,348. All preparers are certified by the IRS and can help families receive the earned income and child tax credit. The free program will be offered at 19 Broadway on Thursday mornings and John H. For Democrats: The Tiverton Democratic Town Committee will hold its biennial reorganization tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Ponta Delgada Patriots Club, 70 Shove St. Also that evening, the Democratic Representative District Committee for House District 70 will convene at 7 p.m. at the same location for its own reorganization. These meetings are being held pursuant to state statute. Food drive and more: Amicable Congregational Church, 3736 Main Rd., will sponsor a townwide food drive to support the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, beginning Sunday. Residents may drop off nonperishable food items all week at Amicable Church, BankNewport (Stone Bridge branch only), St. Christopher Church, St. Theresa Church, Tiverton Town Hall and the Tiverton public libraries. In conjunction with the food drive, Amicable will host a simulated soup kitchen as its monthly dinner and a homelessness awareness overnight, Feb. 3. Beginning at 6 p.m., soup, salad, beverages and dessert will be served in the church’s dining room. The public is welcome to attend. Donations will be accepted at the door. Proceeds from this dinner will benefit Amicable’s operating budget. Amicable and Holy Trinity Youth Group and their chaperones will be served dinner before spending the night outside. Amicable’s front lawn will become “box city,” with the youth setting up refrigerator boxes as temporary shelter. Participants have been asked to find sponsors for the overnight, with the money raised going to Crossroads Rhode Island, the only 24-hour, seven-day-a-week drop in shelter for Rhode Island’s homeless. Exhibit to open: MUSE Gallery, 426 Main St., will open the exhibit “Mindscapes” Thursday with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Featured will be works by Shanth Enjeti, a freelance comic book artist who teaches illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and Montserrat College of Art.
