East Bay Briefings01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, February 28, 2007Lecture series: The Audubon Society’s Environmental Education Center, Hope Street, Bristol, will kick off its next lecture series tomorrow at 7 p.m. with, “To the South Pacific and Beyond,” by photographer Onne van der Wal. A Newport-based nautical photographer, van der Wal has sailed all over the globe but his expeditions to Tonga, Vanuatu, French Polynesia and the South Island of New Zealand have been among his favorites. The fee is $10 for Audubon Society members, $12 for nonmembers. For all four lectures the discounted fee is $35 for members, $40 for nonmembers. Registration is required as space is limited. Foreign Film Series: The Friends of the Jamestown Library will show the final film in the 2007 Foreign Film Series tomorrow. The film, The Chorus (Les Choristes), is a 2005 French film, where the new teacher at a boys’ boarding school works to improve the students’ lives through music. All films are free to the public. Community School offerings: The Barrington Community School is offering a five-week writing course, From Idea to Outline, starting tomorrow. The five two-hour sessions will meet Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barrington Middle School. Tuition is $50 for Barrington residents and $55 for nonresidents. Also beginning soon is Photography II: An Intermediate Course, for those who have completed a basic camera class. The six two-hour sessions will meet Wednesdays, beginning March 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barrington High School. Tuition is $70 Barrington residents and $75 nonresidents. In BCS trip news, there are still tickets available for the March 15 trip to Symphony Hall in Boston for a morning rehearsal. The trip fee is $48, which includes rehearsal ticket, driver tip and BCS escort. Other March trips with openings include the New York City Opera production of Madama Butterfly at Lincoln Center, March 11; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in Boston, March 18, and a March 27 trip to the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dinner dance for senior citizens: The Department of Parks & Recreation, Benjamin Church Senior Center and Substance Abuse and Prevention Task Force will sponsor a senior citizens dinner dance tomorrow from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Jackie’s Galaxie Restaurant, Metacom Avenue. Music will be provided by Swinglane, a 13-piece big band. A buffet will be served and tickets are $10 each for Bristol senior citizens who are members of the senior center. Benefit cycling event: The American Cancer Society will host Spin for Hope Sunday. This is a three-hour indoor cycling event that will take place simultaneously at health clubs in Rhode Island. Bristol Total Fitness, 685 Metacom Ave., will host the East Bay area event. Participants are encouraged to register as an individual and cycle for the three hours or form a team of two or more people and take turns cycling. The registration fee is $25. Individuals registering to cycle the three hours are required to raise a minimum of $300. Those registering as part of a team are required to raise a minimum of $200 each. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers. Bookies Jr. group: The Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., offers a book group for children in grades one, two and three. Bookies Jr. will meet tomorrow from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the 50th birthday of The Cat in the Hat. Children can make their own Cat in the Hat hat, play the game of Roll and Color the Hats, identify rhyming words, and enjoy a snack. No advance registration is necessary for this free program. Workshop for senior citizens: The East Providence Senior Center will sponsor a six-week Mind Body Spirit Medicine workshop Thursdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Charlton Memorial Hospital’s Moody Conference Room, Fall River, starting tomorrow. The workshop will be led by Dr. Christa Johnson, a traditionally trained physician who teaches mind body medicine techniques as an adjunct to traditional western medical treatment. The fee is $150, with a 10-percent discount for senior citizens and employees of SouthCoast. Proceeds will benefit the East Providence Senior Center. Benefit for Cambodia: The Middletown Rotary Club will present its third annual Cambodian evening to benefit Health, Pure Water & Literacy for Cambodia, March 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson & Wales Inn, 213 Taunton Ave., Seekonk. The evening will include Cambodian food, Cambodian music and dancing and presentations on pure water and literacy assistance, the Angkor Hospital for Children, and Cambodian culture. Tickets are $75 each, payable to Middletown Rotary Charitable Trust, and mailed to Phil Driscoll, trust treasurer, 169 Immokolee Drive, Portsmouth, 02871. The deadline for individual or table reservations is tomorrow. Proceeds from two tickets will fund the installation of a biosand filter which will provide pure water for up to 20 villagers or a school of more than 50 children. Public recreation workshop: The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) will conduct a workshop on public recreation for all ages Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gaudet Middle School cafeteria, Turner Road. The workshop will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the existing recreation resources on Aquidneck Island and to provide input on what types of facilities and programs they would like to see improved or added in the future. Specifically, the AIPC is about to lay out possible recreation uses for the proposed Greene Lane Park/Midway Pier project. This site, located on Narragansett Bay at the intersection of Greene Lane and Burma Road, was showcased in the West Side Master Plan as a public park site and would serve as a “hub” for the Aquidneck Island Bike Path and proposed blue trail for kayaks/canoes on the West Side. Another focus of the workshop will be on creating an integrated trail network on Aquidneck Island, including those for walking/running, bicycles, in-line skating, horses and other interests. The workshop is free to the public. Reservations are not required, but since breakfast and lunch will be served at the workshop, an RSVP to 845-9299 will help AIPC determine a head count for the catering.
Annual bus tour: The Museum of Newport Irish History will sponsor its annual narrated bus tour Saturday, beginning with coffee and Danish at 9:30 a.m. at the Ancient Order of Hibernian Hall, Thames Street at Wellington Avenue. The tour will leave promptly at 10 a.m., returning around noon. Reservations are required by calling 846-8865. The fee is by donation.
Ophelia Sessions program: Child & Family Services of Newport County and its Ophelia Sessions program invite young women to Project Runway Meets Ophelia, an evening of promising new designers from Rhode Island School of Design’s Apparel Department, Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Castle Hill Inn & Resort, Ocean Avenue. Grange to meet: The regular meeting of Portsmouth Grange will be held tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Portsmouth Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Rd. Members of Kickemuit Grange will be the special guests.
Opening event: The Portsmouth Arts Guild will inaugurate its new gallery and arts center with a grand opening champagne reception Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Portsmouth Arts Guild Center for the Arts, 2679 East Main Rd. The exhibit to be featured will include oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, sculpture, jewelry, photography, fiber arts and ceramics. The reception celebrates the successful conclusion of a four-year search for a permanent home for the guild. The new center is in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church parish hall. The exhibit will remain on display until April 8 and regular gallery hours are Thursday to Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m.
