Class reunion: The Class of 1952 of St. Mary Academy-Bay View will celebrate its 55th year reunion Sept. 9. The event will begin with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. at the Bay View Chapel, 3040 Pawtucket Ave., Riverside, followed by a luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Tyler Point Grille, 32 Barton Ave., Barrington. Benefit for diabetes: “Newport Under the Stars” celebrity gala to benefit the Joslin Diabetes Center will be held Sept. 19 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at Marble House, Bellevue Avenue, Newport. The gala tops off a two-day event featuring a regatta and a golf tournament. Tickets are $500 per person which includes a cooking demonstration from Top Chef’s Sam Talbot, who himself lives with diabetes; a cocktail party and a dinner with a special performance by the Improv All Stars, featuring alumni from Who’s Line is it Anyway?

Barrington

Travelogue series: Bob Darling will present a travelogue called “Scotland, the Low Roads,” tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Barrington Public Library, County Road. The focus of this presentation will be on the areas of Scotland that don’t show up on the tourist maps — the gardens of Elgin, the parks and beaches of Mull, the wild and largely unsettled Moidart and Ardnamurchan. This program is the sixth in the library’s Summer Travelogue series. Programs remaining in the summer series, are a focus on Italy, Aug. 29, and a round-the-world sailing trip, Sept. 5. These programs are free to all.

Brunch cruise: The Barrington Senior Activity Club will offer a Newport brunch cruise aboard the Vista Jubilee Sept. 3. The trip will include a two-hour stop in Newport for the 10th annual Newport Waterfront Irish Festival. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for children ages 4 to 12. Boarding will begin at 10:15 a.m. with departure at 11. The ship will return at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Barrington Senior Center, County Road. Trip to U.S. Open: Barrington Community School and Tennis Rhode Island have teamed up to offer a day trip to the U.S. Open, Aug. 30.

Participants receive day promenade tickets that permit access to all the grounds, in addition to third level seating at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The trip fee is $105 which includes the tickets, escort, motor coach transportation and driver tip. The group will leave from Barrington at 6:40 a.m. with another pickup at 7 in Warwick. Arrival is expected to be at 11 a.m., when the gates open. Lunch can be purchased at a variety of restaurants and concession stands on the grounds. The group will leave when the daytime matches end, so participants should plan to have dinner there as well. On leaving the stadium, the group will travel directly home. Bristol

Powwow: Four Winds 10th annual Inter-Tribal Pow Wow, hosted by Angel Dove and Wounded Pony (Cynthia and Daniel King), will be held Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Colt State Park, Hope Street. The event will include singing, dancing, drumming Native American arts & crafts, trade goods, a teepee display and storytelling. The Host Drum will be “Nimham Mountain Singers. Grant awarded: The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society has been awarded a $2,000 state grant that will preserve some of its most important historical documents and artifacts. The grant will be used to aid with processing and preserving the papers of two of the town’s most early and prominent families — the DeWolfs and the Pecks. In addition, the grant will cover the cost of archival supplies as well as a consultant to work on the historical inventory.

The secretary of state’s archives division and the Historical Records Advisory Board awarded the grants through the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

East Providence

Concert: The Northeast Navy Show Band will present an outdoor concert tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave. Those planning to attend are welcome to bring picnics and lawn chairs and blankets for seating. This concert is free to all.

Marketing program: The Riverside Branch Library will present Marketing your Business on the Internet on Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This presentation will explore methods to connect people with their business on the Web. Included will be answers to questions about blogs, social networking sites (like myspace.com), podcasts and instant messaging. Participants will also learn about new trends and the latest technology in marketing using the World Wide Web. The program is free to all. For information, call 433-4877.

Middletown

Pet class: The Potter League for Animals will hold a Pet University Class Thursday on ferret care. Participants will be shown about how to best care for ferrets including healthy diets, common illnesses, grooming, training and socializing. Benefit jewelry sale: The Potter League for Animals is holding a costume jewelry sale Friday from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the league’s temporary administrative offices, The Green, Building II, second floor, 1272 West Main Rd. (across from Petco.)

Prices will be up to 70 percent less than retail. All sales will benefit “Honoring their Trust,” the capital campaign for a new animal care and humane education center.

Newport

Slide presentation: The Newport Public Library will host a slide presentation of photographs of Narragansett Bay by Salvatore Mancini tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. The photographs offer an exploration of the man-made features on the Bay — the cities, ports; and the natural beauty of the Bay; featuring also, photos of the Narragansett tribe.

Mancini has exhibited his work throughout the United States and Europe.

Outdoor film showing: The Friends of Ballard Park will present the next “Movies on the Rocks,” Thursday. The featured film will be Dr. No, the first James Bond film starring Sean Connery. Movies are shown in the Quarry Meadow. Seating is on the grass. There is no charge and films will begin at dusk. Picnic dinners welcome. Parking is available in the Rogers High School parking lot. Benefit fishing tournament: The Hannah Grace Spearfishing Tournament will be held Sept. 15 at King’s Beach, Ocean Drive (past Brenton State Park). The event is being held in memory of Hannah Grace Gassaway, who was born with Turner syndrome and money raised will benefit the children of the Magic Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to individuals suffering from growth disorders.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three fish in two categories – striped bass and tautog. A diver may only enter one fish per category. Winning fish will be determined by fish weight. A list of prizes, which will be provided by Apnea-USA, and official rules of the event can be found at www.NewportFreediveCo.com.

Those planning to participate can register in advance and dive anywhere beginning at sunrise. The weigh-in, raffle and refreshments will be at 4 p.m. at King’s Beach.

The cost to register is $20, which includes one free raffle ticket. Those who register in advance, receive two free raffle tickets. Registration on the day of the event will be from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at King’s Beach. Additional raffle tickets will be available for an added cost of $5 for three tickets or $10 for seven tickets.

Sign up for fall activities: The Newport Recreation Department is accepting registrations for several of its fall activities. New for the season is a coed high school water polo league for grades 9 to 12 and a fall “learn to surf” program for boys and girls aged 9 to 15. Water polo is being offered jointly by the Recreation Department and the Newport County YMCA and will be played on Sundays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. The surfing program will be held Saturday afternoons at Easton’s Beach. All equipment will be included, including surf board and wet suit.

The department is also offering a basketball shooting skills camp and a pre-season skills development program. There is a fall baseball and softball program as well. The baseball program offers a travel league for boys 12 and under and a sandlot style league for 10 and under. Girls softball has two divisions, 12 and under and 15 and under. There is also a learn to play clinic for baseball and softball.

Surfboards for rent: The beach store at Easton’s Beach, Rosie’s, is now renting surfboards. The store already rents beach chairs, boogey boards, umbrellas and daily bathhouses, will now rent surfboards from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Rental rates are $25, for 90-minutes, $50 for a half day and $75 for a full day. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Beginning this fall, and continuing next summer, Easton’s Beach will also offer surfing lessons and surfing instructional camps. For information or to reserve a board rental, call 845-5810.

Portsmouth

Annual observation: The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society and the Newport County Branch National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will host the annual observation of the Battle of Rhode Island Sunday at 3 p.m. at Patriot’s Park, Routes 114 and 24.

This year’s program marks the 229th anniversary of the historic Battle of Rhode Island. Special honor and recognition is given to the First Rhode Island Regiment, “the Black Regiment” comprised of Africans, Native Americans and their descendants who helped stop Hessian forces on Aug. 29, 1778, during the Revolutionary War.

The featured speaker for this event will be Superior Court Judge Edward Clifton. All are welcome.

Public workshop: A participatory workshop, “Where do we go from here?”, regarding Portsmouth’s moratorium on commercial development, will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Portsmouth Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Rd. Included will be members of the Town Council, boards and committees. Coffee and dessert will be served. All residents are welcome to attend.

Tiverton

Half price sale: The Trinity Trader Thrift Shop, 1956 Main Rd., will offer all merchandise at half price beginning Thursday and continuing through Sept. 1. The shop is open Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds benefit Holy Trinity Church.

Antiques show: Tiverton Four Corners, Routes 179 and 77, will hold an antiques show Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Now in its 15th year, the show will be held indoors and outdoors on the grounds of the arts center and feature 45 high quality antiques and fine arts dealers. Admission for early buyers, from 7 to 9 a.m., will be $15 per person.
