Cats Alive Auction: A benefit cocktail party and silent auction for PawsWatch Cat Rescue will be held Nov. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Easton’s Beach Rotunda, Memorial Boulevard, Newport. Tickets are $35 per person and proceeds will help pay for veterinary care and provide food and shelter for feral and homeless cats. Barrington

Benefit golf tournament: The 34th annual Bayside YMCA Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 7 at Rhode Island Country Club. The tournament proceeds provide financial assistance to youth, families and individuals who otherwise would not be able to participate in the programs and services at the YMCA.

The entry fee for the tournament is $600 per foursome and includes green fees, golf cart, lunch and dinner. Other sponsorship levels, as well as tee sign sponsorships, also are available. The tournament begins with registration at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

Bristol

Dog Day Afternoon : In an effort to raise awareness and support for the November referendum question on construction of a new animal shelter, Friends Of The Bristol Animal Shelter will sponsor Dog Day Afternoon, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Independence Park, Thames Street. This event includes new shelter specifics, canine demonstrations, pet grooming presentations, food, games and more. There is no cost for this event. Special theater performance: 2nd Story Theatre will present a special performance of The Faith Healer by Brian Friel at the Bristol Statehouse, 240 High St., from Oct. 23 to Nov. 2. Little Compton

Crafts at the Library: Brownell Library, the Commons, is offering crafts on Saturdays for children ages 5 to 8. Seasonal crafts will be held Oct. 4 and 25 at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required and can be done by calling 635-8562 or stopping by the library.

Middletown

Open house: Temple Shalom, an egalitarian independent conservative congregation, invites prospective members and those wishing to obtain cards of admission for the High Holy Days of 5769 to an open house Sunday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Visitors can meet the rabbi, learn about the congregational community, tour the facility, find out about the temple’s wide range of programs and the Samuel Zilman Bazarsky Religious School.

Book reading: Author Louella Bryant will read from her new book, While in Darkness There is Light, a story of idealism, risk and tragic consequence of young expatriates in Australia during the Vietnam War era, Oct. 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hill Library at St. George’s School, 372 Purgatory Rd., Middletown.

St. George’s alumni Harry Reynolds (SGS ’69), Charlie Dean (SGS ’68) and Kim Haskell (SGS ’69) are major characters in the book. An early chapter of the book takes place at St. George’s in the 1960s and describes the backgrounds of the boys and how they became friends.

The talk is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

Newport

Auditions: The Newport Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for two one-act holiday shows tonight at 6 p.m. and tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Newport Congregational Church, Spring and Pelham Streets. The shows, A Gift From the Toys and A Modern Christmas Carol, will be directed by Linda J. Vars. There are parts for teens and young actors over age 8. A stage manager and crew are also needed. Performances will be held Dec. 12, 13 and 14. Cast members must be available for all performances, and are required to pay a $75 production fee. For information, call 848-0266.

Culinary program orientation: The Community College of Rhode Island will hold an orientation for its Culinary Arts Assistant Certificate Program Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Room 200 at the Newport County Campus, One John H. Chafee Blvd.

Students can meet Chef Ken Collins, the program adviser, and learn more about the 15-week program in Newport that will begin Nov. 10 and run through March 2.

During the course, students will learn about food sanitation and safety and restaurant operations/management and will spend a significant amount of time in the hands-on kitchen lab. Students also spend a minimum of 72 hours in internships provided by area hospitality, dining and food service establishments.

Portsmouth

Library news: The Portsmouth Free Public Library, 2658 East Main Rd., has resumed its regular hours of operation. The library’s hours are now Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. In addition, storytime for children ages 3 to 8 will be held in the Children’s Room every Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tiverton

Woman’s Club to meet: The Woman’s Club of Newport County will hold a buffet luncheon Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Theresa Church Hall, Stafford Road. The presentation, “Learn to Create a Fall Celebration,” will be given by Ana Rothenbuhler of Snapdragons Floral Boutiques. Members are asked to bring items for the November basket raffle. Warren Walkabout: The fifth annual Warren Walkabout will be held Oct. 19 from noon to 5 p.m. This event features artist open studios on Water Street and in the Cutler Mill district; Taste of Warren at the Fire Station next to the Easy Bay Bike Path, live music till sundown at the Town Wharf and sidewalk sales and art shows from downtown shops and galleries. Barbecue postponed: The Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans has postponed its annual chicken barbecue from tomorrow to next Saturday because of the threat of heavy rains and high winds. The barbecue will be held at 4 p.m. at the Pete Sepe pavilion at the Warren Athletic Complex, which is off Hugh Cole Road. The barbecue includes a half chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, rolls and dessert. Tickets, at $10 each, can be obtained by calling 245-5431.

Library Film Series: The George Hail Library will host a classic film series this fall. Films will be shown on classic film projection equipment Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited to 30.
