Regional
Grange to meet: The regular meeting of the Newport County Pomona Grange will be held at Kickemuit Grange, 92 Vernon St., Warren, Saturday . The meeting will open at 4:30 p.m. and supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. The program will be a recap of the Rhode Island portion of the Northeast Regional Lecturers Conference held in August.
Benefit walk: The Brandon Motta 5K Race and Fun Walk will be held Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. in Colt State Park, Bristol. Participants will help raise money for necessary renovations to the Motta home. Brandon is a 6-year-old from Riverside who suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth, a neuromuscular disease that has confined him to a wheelchair since the age of 2.

Lacrosse program: The Ocean State Lacrosse Club is offering a four-session “dodge and shoot” program Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings starting the week of Sept. 27 and ending the week of Oct. 22 at Guiteras School, 35 Washington St.
There are four sessions to each time slot — Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m., Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22, or Saturdays, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Sept. 27, Oct. 4, 18 and 25. Slots are available on a first come first-served basis.
The program will be run by coaches Jeff Popham (Portsmouth Abbey, East Bay Youth Lacrosse) and Marty Kelly (Roger Williams University).
Each session will be limited to 24 players. The program is geared for players at all levels of experience ages 9 to18 who are interested in becoming better dodgers and shooters.All players are required to be members of US Lacrosse. Male players will be required to wear helmets, gloves, and arm pads to help get used to wearing them and for their safety. Female players will be required to wear goggles for their safety. The player fee for four sessions is $80.

After Hours: All teens are invited to attend the teen night called “After Hours at 70 West Street,” Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. The YMCA will be open to all middle school students to enjoy dancing and live music by a DJ, swim in the outdoor pool and hang out and eat at the snack bar. Admission is $5 and all refreshments are $1. Chaperons are needed.
The Bayside Family YMCA, the Bay Team, Jam Stage and the Bristol/Warren Substance Abuse Task Force sponsor “After Hours at 70 West Street.” For information, call 245-2444.
Hurricane of 1938 remembered: The Hurricane of 1938 will be remembered with a program of photographs, a documentary and personal recollections tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Barrington Library, County Road. Sponsored by the Barrington Preservation Society, the program will be followed by refreshments in the society’s museum on the lower level of the library. The event is free and open to the public.
Bristol
Daughters to meet: Hope Circle No. 70, Daughters of Isabella, will hold its first meeting of the season tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at St. Mary Church, Wood Street.
Walking tours: The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society will hold its next walking tour tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Led by Ray Battcher, the tour is entitled “Byfield Street.” Tours, which are $5 for non-members and free to members, begin from the society’s headquarters, 48 Court St. For information, call 253-7223.
Harvest Fair: Coggeshall Farm Museum, Poppasquash Road, will hold its 35th annual Harvest Fair Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featured will be small tents of a period style with crafters and many demonstrators, including a basket maker, dyer, paint maker, weavers, spinners, hearth cooks, a blacksmith and more. Carol Glanville and her History Kids will host period games and a craft tent. There will also be an 18th-century-style magician, Mr. Bayly, and Claire Gregoire with her Punch and Judy show, hay and pony rides and Jacob’s Ladder. Challenge events include the greased pole climb, a crosscut saw competition, horseshoes, tug of war and an apple pie baking contest. Volunteers are needed to help out with the event. Anyone with time to share is asked to call 451-9098 to find out how they can help.
Admission will be $8 for adults, $4 for museum members, senior citizens and children ages 6 to 12.
Annual yard sale: The Hopeworth Community Association is holding its annual yard sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (the rain date is Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at the Hopeworth Community Association’s Park at the bottom of Hopeworth Avenue. Set up time is 8 a.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be available.
Many households in the neighborhood will be displaying their items for sale including a Barbie Jeep, dollhouse, kitchen playset with accessories, books, etc.
Space is also available at $15 for anyone interested in participating . Proceeds go into the general fund of the association. For information on renting space, call 253-5246.
Touch-a-Truck: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., will hold its seventh annual Touch-a-Truck Day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Town Common. Children will have the opportunity to explore various types of construction equipment, dump trucks, tractors, tow trucks, fire, police and rescue vehicles, racing cars, television trucks, military vehicles and more. Admission is $6 per child, adults are free. Bring a canned good or non-perishable item and admission is $5. East Providence
Welcome reception: A welcome reception to meet the new East Providence superintendent of schools, Mario F. Cirillo Jr., will be held tonight from 5 to 7 in the James T. Kanelos Dining Hall at East Providence High School, Pawtucket Avenue. Refreshments will be served.
Senior Health Fair: The East Providence Senior Center, 610 Waterman Ave., will host a senior health fair today from 2 to 5 p.m. All are welcome. Information regarding health insurance, assisted living, hospice care, adult day care, volunteer opportunities, nutritional counseling, pharmacy outreach, home care, Alzheimer’s Association, antique appraisal and more will be available.
Little Compton
Grange to meet: The regular meeting of Little Compton Grange will be held tonight at 7. There will not be a potluck supper. There will be installation of officers. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Any members wishing to go to the tate grange banquet on Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Ramada Inn in Seekonk are asked to call Norma Elwell, 635-4749 by today for the menu choices. Little Compton Grange pays for this banquet.
Citizens Police Academy: The Little Compton Police Department will conduct a Citizens Police Academy beginning Monday . The academy consists of 10 weeks of in-class and hands-on training covering various aspects of law enforcement. The classes will meet once a week from 7 to 9 p.m. Some classes may run longer depending on the subject.
There is no cost to participate. All applicants must be 18 years or older and pass a criminal background check. Class enrollment is limited to 20 students. Little Compton residents will have first preference. In order to graduate from the academy, participants must attend at least seven of the 10 classes.

Middletown
Joint replacement seminar: The public is invited to learn what to expect when recovering from joint replacement surgery at a free seminar, “Get Hip to Physical and Occupational Therapy,” tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Blenheim-Newport, 303 Valley Rd. in Middletown. The free seminar will be led by experienced physical and occupational therapists with the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol County. They will cover hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement surgery and answer questions about the recovery process. Refreshments will be served, and seating is limited. Lecture series: Odette Mukazi Mutanguha, the national coordinator for Forum for African Women Educationalists in Rwanda for the past six years, will present “Build a Better Africa: Working for Women, Human Rights, Education, and Peace” tonight at 6 p.m. at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy.
Free and open to the public, Mutanguha’s lecture is part of the Pell Center’s Courage to Speak series that highlights how women make a difference in solving human crises throughout the globe.

Concert season begins: Newport Baroque will begin its seventh season of 17th- and 18th-century music performed on period instruments Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Hawes Room at Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square. Featured will be harpsichordist Paul Cienniwa, who will perform J.S. Bach’s complete Klavierübung, Book II. The collection includes the French Overture and the popular Italian Concerto.

Annual meeting: The board of trustees of the Newport Public Library will hold its annual meeting tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the library’s Program Room, Spring Street. Of interest to parents of school-age children will be remarks by Howard Boksenbaum, chief library officer for the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services. He will introduce the group to the new online library resources. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend this free event.
Art show opens: The first art show created and hosted by the children and teens of Child & Family Services Residential Programs will open tomorrow with a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Newport Art Museum’s Coleman Center, behind the museum, 76 Bellevue Ave. The children have been preparing their artistic view of “hope.”

Tiverton
Baskeball League sign-ups: The final registration for the 2008-09 Tiverton Junior Basketball League will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tiverton Community Center, Judson Street. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Those who are registering for the first time must provide proof of age. A registration fee of $65 per child or $90 per family is required. In any case where financial hardship exists, help is available by contacting Joe Perry, 624-3370. These requests will be kept in strict confidence.
Players in all divisions must be residents of Tiverton or Little Compton or full-time students in the Tiverton or Little Compton school systems.
The Instructional Division is for boys and girls who are first time players and who will be age 7 or 8 as of Dec. 31.
Girls Division includes the Junior Division for girls ages 9, 10 and 11 as of Dec. 31. The Senior Division is for girls 12 and 13 years old. Girls who are 14 years old as of Dec. 31 and in the eighth grade are also eligible.
The Co-Ed Division has three divisions for children who will be at least 9 years old but not more than 13 as of Dec. 31. Eight-year-olds who have previously completed the instructional program will participate with the 9-year-olds.
The High School Division is for boys who do not participate in varsity or junior varsity sports from December through March and are ages 14 or 15 as of Dec. 31.
Fish bake: Bliss Four Corners Congregational Church, 1264 Stafford Rd., will hold its annual fish bake Saturday with continuous all-you-can-eat servings from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under and free for children 3 and under. For information, call (508) 678-9235.
