Barrington

Concert in the making: Barrington Community School is offering a day trip Oct. 16 to see a final rehearsal of the Boston Symphony Orchestra with James Levine conducting and pianist Maurizio Pollini, in a program that includes Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6, Schumann Piano Concerto and the world premiere of Kirchner’s The Forbidden. Morning rehearsals include an informative, preehearsal talk and notes on the program.

Second in this fall offering is a Nov. 13 rehearsal, featuring conductor Marek Janowski and Alban collaborating in Dvorak Cello Concerto and Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Pastorale.

Following each rehearsal, the group will be transported to the Prudential Center, where a number of shops and restaurants offer a wide variety of choices. The trip fee of $48 per rehearsal includes the BSO rehearsal ticket, BCS escort, motorcoach transportation, and driver tip.

Bristol

Theater performances: The Mill River Players are presenting Belongings, a comedy/drama, Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm. and Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Harborside Playhouse, 850 Metacom Ave. (the VFW Hall) through Oct. 26.

East Providence

Pickups delayed: Residents who ordinarily have their rubbish collected on Mondays will have it collected Saturday due to the upcoming Columbus Day holiday, Monday. All rubbish, yard waste and recycling should be curbside by 6 a.m. The regular Monday collection will resume Oct. 20.

Fall Meeting House Series: Three Rhode Island educators will take part in the first session of the Fall Meeting House Series hosted by Newman Congregational Church, Newman Avenue, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Dr. Mario Andrade, Dr. Caroline Caswell and Dr. Dan Miller will reflect on various aspects of education in Rhode Island. Andrade is head of school at Central Falls High School, Caswell is principal at East Providence High School and Miller leads The Wheeler School in Providence. This discussion is open to the public. There will be time for questions and answers, and a reception will follow.

Grant awarded: Kent Heights School has been awarded a $3,000 grant for cultural programming during the 2008-08 school year through Bob’s Discount Furniture “Celebrate the Arts Contest.”

Candidates nights: East Bay Manor, 1440 Wampanoag Trail, will host its second Candidates’ Night, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to the voters from Ward 4. Candidates running for School Committee, City Council, state representative (District 65) and state senator (District 18) have been invited to participate.

Little Compton

Grange to meet: The next regular meeting of Little Compton Grange will be held Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. with a potluck supper, followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. at the IOOF hall, the Commons. There will also be an agriculture program and sale and the installation of three officers.

Middletown

Candidates forum: The Concerned Citizens About Casino Gambling will host its second Newport County Candidates Forum Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Middletown Public Library, 700 West Main Rd. The event is for House candidates. Keith W. Stokes, executive director of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, will serve as forum moderator. The public is welcome. Ecotourism program: The Norman Bird Sanctuary will launch a new ecotourism program with a weekend focused on the local food movement Oct. 24-26. The tour includes a cooking class, visits to local farms and more.

This weekend includes tours of Newport Biodiesel, Matunuck Oyster Farm and the historic Cliff Walk. The tour price includes accommodations, meals (except Saturday evening), transportation during the tour, and all programming fees.

Newport

Benefit yard sale: The Edward King House Senior Center, 35 King St., will hold a yard sale fundraiser Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Featured will be treasures, antiques, books and more. Donations will be accepted until Oct. 9.

Letters on exhibit: The Newport Art Museum marks the 2008 election with an exhibition of letters written by 42 different American presidents, including missives from George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, Ronald Reagan, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush. The letters, many of which feature photographs or engravings of the Presidents, form part of the Terrence and Suzanne Murray Collection. Portsmouth

Pumpkin plays: Children age 7 and up and adults of all ages are invited to audition for Pumpkin Plays produced by the Portsmouth Community Theater, Oct. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. on the stage at the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy, 321 East Main Rd. Senior center activities: The Portsmouth Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Rd., will hold a Halloween dinner dance Oct. 25 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. The menu will feature roast pork and music will be by The Silvertones. Tickets, which are nonrefundable, are $14 per person.

Upcoming health clinics include a podiatry clinic Oct. 17 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and a heart attack and stroke seminar Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. A blood pressure clinic will be held Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to noon. Flu clinics will be held Oct. 17 and Nov. 14 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Advance registration is required. A variety of exercise programs are also offered including a fitness center.

Other events include a free movie shown every Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. in the center’s library. A financial advisor will visit the center every Tuesday in October from 1 to 4 p.m. Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch will visit Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. Also Oct. 23, an Alzheimer’s Awareness seminar, which is open to the public, will be held at 9:30 a.m. The community information specialist is at the center every Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. Call for an appointment, Leisha Hackett, 848-4185.
