Mediation classes: The Rhode Island Sri Chinmoy Centre continues its three-week series of classes titled “Learn to Mediate” tomorrow and Oct. 11 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at the New England Martial Arts Center Dojo, 879 Arcade Ave., Seekonk (next to the Grist Mill). Advance registration is required by calling 438-3115. The classes will include techniques for relaxation, concentration and mediation as well as suggestions for setting up a daily mediation practice.
Barrington
Flu shot clinics: This year the Bayside Family YMCA, 70 West St., will be a community flu site. Beginning Monday through Dec. 14, weekly flu shot clinics will be held for adults and children age 6 months and older. Most Rhode Island insurance plans will be accepted.
The Wellness Company will donate $1 for each flu shot to the Y’s annual financial assistance program. Appointments are available and may be made by visiting The Wellness Company Web site at www.thewellcomp.com and clicking on “Community Flu Events.”
Clinics will be held Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. There is a $15 charge for some health insurance plans or for those without health insurance who are between the ages of 6 months and 18 years. There is a $25 charge for those without insurance and age 19 and older.

Bristol
Book club: The Young Adult Book Club will begin its fall meetings Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on the first floor of the new building, 525 Hope St. Any reader in the 6th to 12th grade is welcome to join. The books for the fall include Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini. Book suggestions are welcome. The schedule of events for the fall and winter will be announced soon.
The Rogers Free Chess Club will resume meeting Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. Chess players of all ages and skills are welcome to join on any Wednesday.

Walking tours: The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society will hold a walking tour Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Led by Ray Battcher in the persona of Simeon Potter, the tour will start at the society’s headquarters, 48 Court St., and travel along Hope and Thames streets, recounting the events of Oct. 7, 1775, and May 25, 1778. Light refreshments will follow the walk.
Also Sunday, the society’s headquarters will be open for visitors from 2 to 5 p.m. The tour is $10 for nonmembers, $5 for members. For information, call 253-7223.
Middletown
Retirees meet: The National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 0869, will serve a free buffet lunch at its next meeting, Tuesday at 12:30 p.m., at the United Congregational Church, Valley Road. Following the meeting at 1:30 p.m., Brother Joseph, teacher at the Portsmouth Abbey School, will speak about the wind turbine at the Abbey. All retired and active government employees are invited to attend (and join if not already a member). Parking is easy and handicap accessible. Newport
Operas to be screened: The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center is one of the few theaters in America — and one of only four in New England — screening the operas Norma and Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
There will be two separate screenings, Sunday at 12:30 p.m., Norma; and Oct. 12, 12:30 p.m., Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
Tickets are $20 per screening. Advance ticket purchase is recommended and tickets are available at www.janepickens.com, by calling 846-5474 or at the box office at 49 Touro St.

Archaeology Month presentation: The George Hail Library, 530 Main St., in recognition of Archaeology Month, will present “The Archaeology of Warren — Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with Charlotte Taylor, staff archaeologist with the state’s Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission.
