Sail for Hope: The annual Sail for Hope race around Jamestown will be held Saturday. First start will be at 11 a.m. outside Newport Harbor. There will be an after-race party, trophies and auction at Newport Shipyard. Boats over 22 feet are invited to participate. The fee is $5 per foot based on length overall. All sailors are invited; Sail Newport will assign a rating if needed.
Register online at www.sailnewport.org. Sailors will receive wristbands for the party. Guests are invited to attend the party; additional tickets are available for a fee of $10. A cash bar and auction will take place after the event at the Newport Shipyard tent.
The proceeds will benefit local sailing teams from Rogers, Portsmouth and North Kingstown high schools, the Newport Harbormaster Emergency Equipment Fund and the Rhode Island Red Cross. For information, e-mail kim.cooper@sailnewport.org or call 846-1983.
Barrington
CD release party: The Friends of the Barrington Public Library will sponsor a free concert by Avi & Celia, who have just released Let It Rise, their new CD. The event is tonight at 7:30 at the Barrington Public Library Theatre, 281 County Rd. Avi Salloway, a former Barrington resident and BHS graduate, is half of the folk duet.
Pumpkin Junction festival, dance and supper: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Rd., will hold its Pumpkin Junction sale now through Saturday, when the event culminates with a Kids’ Fest, a 150th birthday square dance and church barbecue.
The Kids Fest will begin at 8:30 a.m., when there will be pumpkins for sale, a café selling breakfast and lunch treats, arts and crafts for sale and games, entertainment and rides for children. Encore, the church thrift shop, will be open. There is no charge to attend any of these daytime events.
At 5:30 p.m., a barbecue supper will be served under a tent, followed by an evening of square dancing, complete with a caller and instruction. The cost for supper and the square dancing is $10 per person, $20 per couple, and $30 for a family. For information, call St. John’s Church, 245-4065 or e-mail stjbar@att.net.
The public is welcome. Proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins will benefit many outreach programs of the church, including the local food bank. The pumpkins are for sale through October or until supplies run out.

Fall concert series: Linden Place Museum will launch its fall concert series with a performance by Michael DiMucci and Friends Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the gardens of Linden Place Mansion, 500 Hope St.
Pianist Diane Gualtieri, percussionist Karen Mellor and trumpeter Dick Parent will accompany DiMucci.Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and all picnic amenities. An optional picnic lunch can be ordered in advance for $10 and picked up on arrival.
Admission is free for Colt Circle members, $15 for the public and $10 for members of Linden Place and students with a valid ID. To make a reservation and request a picnic lunch, contact the Linden Place office, 253-0390. Picnic lunches must be ordered by tomorrow.
Fall story time programs: Rogers Free Library will offer fall story time programs in its new Children’s Department with craft activities and a snack.
The first fall session begins Monday and ends Nov. 6. Story times for 2- and 3-year-olds will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. A story time program for 4- and 5-year-olds will be held Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.
All story time programs are free. Registration is required and can be done by calling 253-6948 or by stopping by the Children’s Desk to sign up.
East Providence
Trips planned: The East Providence Recreation Department is planning a Nov. 5 trip to the North Shore Musical Theatre in Beverly, Mass., to see 42nd Street.
A trip to Wentworth Hills Golf Club in Plainville, Mass., for an afternoon of entertainment with Father Misgivings will be held Nov. 12. Lunch is included. Also, a trip to Mohegan Sun is planned for Nov. 19.

Blessing of the animals: All creatures great and small will be able to receive a blessing at the Church of the Epiphany’s annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. service. Dogs, cats, birds, fish and reptiles are welcome. After the service, at 11:45 a.m., larger animals will be blessed by the clergy on the church grounds at 1336 Pawtucket Ave.
The service will also include the lively sounds of The Waylanders, a local bluegrass/country/gospel band.

Pumpkin fair: The Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Ave., will hold a festive fall pumpkin sale on the church property beginning Saturday through Oct. 30. Parishioners will sell pumpkins of varying sizes daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A Colonial Medical Show: The Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave, will present “A Colonial Medical Show” Monday at 7 p.m. Dave Downs will talk about medical instruments and surgical practices presented in a lighthearted manner. A retired teacher, and a member of The Living History Association and the Rehoboth Minutemen, Downs shares his love of history and adds a little comedy to his programs.

Gigantic flea market: The Stewardship Board of the United Congregational Church, Valley Road at Green End Avenue will hold a flea market Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the driveway of the church. The date of the event was rescheduled due to poor weather last weekend. Merchandise will include antiques, collectibles, books and serviceable household items. New this year will be a farm table with fresh produce, jams and jellies. Lunch will be available.

Choreographer’s competition: The Island Moving Company’s Choreographers Competition will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the company’s studio, 3 Charles St. The featured choreographer is Leo Gallo of Los Angeles. Audiences will have the opportunity to talk with the choreographer about his work and observe his work with the company’s dancers.
Kelly Ann Sloan, the second week finalist, will show her work in the same venue Oct. 10, and Adrienne Westwood will close her week with the company Oct. 17. All workshop performances are free.

Members’ reception: The Newport Art Museum will host a members’ reception for fall exhibitions tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will feature the exhibits “Daniel McManus: New Work,” “The Eloquence of Place: Forty Years of the Newport Restoration Foundation,” “Portraits of Newport Governors from the Rhode Island State House Collection,” and “Richard Grosvenor: Newport’s Muse and Mentor.”

Pumpkin Festival: Escobar’s Highland Farm, 133 Middle Rd., will hold its Pumpkin Festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event was rescheduled from last weekend due to the rain. The event will include pumpkin games and prizes, face painting and pumpkin crafts, scarecrow making, hay rides, the cow train and more. Voter registration opportunities: With the cooperation of Tiverton’s Board of Canvassers staff, the Tiverton Democratic Town Committee has arranged to conduct a voter registration session for Sakonnet Bay Manor residents today at 1:30 p.m.
Other Tiverton residents who would like to register before the Oct. 4 deadline for full voting eligibility in November’s general election, but unable to get to Town Hall, can arrange a visit by a committee member. At the same time, they can obtain an application for a mail ballot. Call 624-4661.

Flu clinic: The Warren Senior Center, 20 Libby Lane, will hold a flu clinic Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, the clinic is open to anyone over the age of 18. Participants are reminded to bring their health insurance card. The flu vaccination is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, private pay, sliding fee scale.
