Barrington

Comedy film series: The Barrington Public Library will offer its latest film lecture series, Screwball Comedy, presented by librarian Doug Swiszcz, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays this month. The genre developed in response to the establishment of Hollywood’s self-censoring Production Code in 1934, which required what was allowed on screen to be “morally acceptable.” So moviemakers created a style of comedy in which men and women engaged in witty verbal combat and often physical slapstick to convey romantic combustibility. The series begins tonight with It Happened One Night, the 1934 Frank Capra-directed film that is often credited with being the first screwball comedy on celluloid.
